Top Schools in Adelaide

One thing to note about this guide and all the guides about the best schools across Australia is that there is a lot of incomplete and even contradictory information out there.

Some ranking sites tout high Australian Tertiary Admissions Rating (ATAR) achievements; the percentage of students who ranked at 95% or higher, for example. Others look only at Maths and English exam scores to decide which schools are the best; they don't consider ATAR percentages. Many schools don’t even disclose this information (at least, not in a way where we can find it!).

The lack of standardised data for schools across Australia is a stumbling block for creating any ranked list. With these gaps in data acknowledged, we’ve put together a formidable Adelaide high school ranking:

Campus Culture

Research more about the school’s values and atmosphere, like if they utilise a religion-based curriculum or not, to be sure you match. Students typically benefit from a student body that reports high student satisfaction!

Curriculum & Learning Options

These days, there are many options for types of schools and teaching methodologies. You may want a school that adheres to traditional methods, or maybe you want to explore teaching like Montessori.

It may also be in need of a school that caters to exceptional needs like 'gifted and talented' learning programs. Check out the best schools in Melbourne for the high school offerings in Victoria.

ATAR & NAPLAN

When focusing solely on data, selecting a school with a high Australian Tertiary Admission Ranking (ATAR) can be a good idea. This ranking reflects a student’s academic performance relative to peers of the same age who are enrolled in similar classes. It is applicable nationwide and considers specific testing from each state; for instance, in Western Australia, it relies on data from the Western Australian Certificate of Education (WACE) exams.

The National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) is a standardized exam administered across the country for students in years 3, 5, 7, and 9. It assesses the growth and progress of students at each school, ensuring they are learning the required material.

Recently, NAPLAN's grading system was revised, allowing for comparisons of scores from 2017 to 2022 and from 2023 onward. However, scores from before 2023 cannot be compared with those from 2023 and later.

As we explore the best schools in Adelaide, we’ll briefly look at academics and more. Just as in Brisbane-area high schools, there are many facets that constitute the high school experience.

The Best Public High Schools in Adelaide

There are about 125 government high schools in South Australia, so there are a lot of options to choose from. However, obviously, you must choose a school that is close to your home!

While government schools may have less funding and more students enrolled, you can still receive a high-quaity education at most government schools. Your experience also depends heavily on your unique learning style and interpersonal relationships!
