Students starting Year 11 Mathematics in 2026 are studying the updated syllabuses published in 2024.⁷ Students completing Year 12 and sitting the HSC in 2026 continue under the previous syllabus arrangements.¹ The updated Year 12 courses begin from Term 4 2026, with the first HSC examinations under the new syllabuses held in 2027.³

The HSC Maths pathways should allow you to choose the style of maths that matches your future plans. Standard and Advanced start as separate pathways, but the Extensive courses can add further depth to Advanced. Keep this in mind when comparing the courses.

How the HSC Maths Pathways Fit Together

HSC exam: For students sitting the 2026 HSC, the Standard 1 examination is optional. Students seeking an ATAR can choose to sit the exam, and the resulting mark may contribute to their ATAR calculation.¹

Advanced is a good choice if you enjoy understanding why mathematical methods work and are happy regularly practising unfamiliar problems. You'll need a strong algebraic foundation, since many later topics require confidence in manipulating expressions, equations, and functions.

Most importantly, the course is also great preparation for those wanting ot study mathematics, science, engineering, or economics at university. Just remember that Mathematics Advanced isn't a universal university requirement. Prerequisites and assumed knowledge can vary between unis. Extension courses are for students who want to go even further with the Advanced pathway. These add mathematical depth with more demanding reasoning. This means they add to your workload rather than provide an alternative to Mathematics Advanced.

Mathematics Extension 1

Not every university has the same requirements.
