“A child needs encouragement like a plant needs water.” - Rudolf Dreikurs

During the coronavirus pandemic and subsequent lockdowns, school closures have been a regular occurrence. As a replacement, teachers are providing classes over webcam with videoconferencing software. When kids are allowed back in school, there are new measures and all their normal routines have been turned on their heads.

Some students adapt well to change, but others don’t. With exams cancelled, we’re still yet to see the real effects of the school closures in the first lockdown in the spring of 2020 in the early days of the COVID pandemic.

Some students will have fallen behind, but they can always benefit from academic support if they need it.

So where can you find online academic support tutors?

In this article, we'll look at some of the best websites for parents to find online tutoring services.

How do you get online tutorials on Superprof?
With Superprof, you pay once a month to contact as many tutors as you like. (Source: kaboompics)

Many tutors have already pivoted to online tutorials during the pandemic so you won’t struggle to find the right tutor for your child.

There are thousands of tutors providing academic tuition for primary school, secondary school, college, or university students.

How Can You Find an Online Academic Support Tutor on Superprof?

It’s easily done. On the site, you just need to search for the subject you want tuition in. If it’s schooling in general, you can just look for “Academic Tutoring”. Then you need to put in your location.

You’ll be presented with a list of suitable tutors in the area. You can choose to search for “Nearby” tutors or “Online” tutors. When you switch to “Online”, you’ll get even more results! Don’t hesitate to filter your results by rate, the response time (the more responsive, the better), and level.

How Much Does It Cost to Use Superprof?

You can view as many profiles as you want, but if you want to get in touch with tutors, you’ll need to get a Student Pass for £29 for the month. While your monthly Student Pass is active, you can contact as many tutors as you want during the month and cancel the subscription at any time.

Once you’ve chosen a tutor, all payments are between you and them. The tutors set their rates and Superprof doesn’t take any commission. You may want to ask about discounts for block-booking, etc. as tutors might reduce their rates for regular work.

Don't forget that there are a lot of tutors who'll offer the first hour of tutoring for free. It's a good idea to try out several different tutors before you decide which one is best for you.

Sherpa

Sherpa is a platform that offers one-to-one online tuition and it functions in a similar way to Superprof. You just need to search for the subject you want to study.

Which are the best sites for online tutorials?

You can filter by level, qualified teachers, and DBS checked, too, which is important if they'll be working unsupervised with primary or secondary school students. You can also filter by hourly rate, which is very useful if you’re on a budget.

Tutors on the platform tend to start at £15 per hour but the most experienced tutors can charge upwards of £50 an hour.

Tutor Hunt

Tutor Hunt is a tutoring platform that offers both in-person and online tutoring, though the latter is probably the more popular choice at the moment.

You can search for tutors by level, subject, and location. It's free to browse the tutors' profiles but you will have to either pay a finder's fee or the platform will take a commission from the tutor once you decide to work with a given tutor.

How much do online tutorials cost?

The average finder's fee on the platform is £24, which is lower than the typical tutoring agency.

As for tutors on a commission, Tutor Hunt takes between 20% and 25%, which means you don't have to pay an upfront fee for the tutor, but their rates may be inflated to account for the commission they have to pay.

The lessons include a virtual whiteboard that the tutor and student can work on together, which is pretty handy for online learning.

Check out our tips for effective online tutorials.

First Tutors

First Tutors is a tutoring platform offering private tuition both in-person and online in different subjects. While the former mightn't be too useful during the coronavirus pandemic, there are plenty of tutors and resources that can help both children and their parents online.

First Tutors uses a similar system to Tutor Hunt's finder's fee and you can browse the tutors' profiles for free and even contact them without making a payment.

Once you've decided on which tutor to work with, you'll have to pay the "intro fee" of between £4.99 and £24.99 to get the tutor's details. This fee is based on the tutor's hourly rates so the more expensive the tutor you hire, the more the intro fee will cost.

Tutorful

To ensure your child keeps up with their learning during the coronavirus pandemic, consider getting an online tutor on Tutorful. Tutorful also offers both in-person and online one-to-one lessons.

Much like other tutoring platforms, it's free to browse the tutors' profiles and even contact them. As for booking lessons, however, everything is done through the platform. The tutor books in the lesson for their student and you won't be charged until 24 hours after the session.

As for the tutors, they will be charged a 25% fee for up to 250 hours of tuition which drops to 20% after they've taught over 250 hours. It's free for the tutors to sign up, but with between a fifth and a quarter of their earnings going to the platform, their rates may be inflated.

What are the benefits of online tutoring?
During the pandemic, the demand for online tutoring has increased drastically. (Source: Lalmch)

It’s up to you to try a few different ones out and see which platform works for you. It's important to understand how each platform works as it will affect the quality of the tutor you can get and how much they charge.

To get the best rates from tutors, you want to look for them on a platform that doesn't charge them. To get the best quality of tutors, you want to make sure that the website or platform will check and validate their credentials and qualifications and that they have a plethora of positive reviews from previous students.

Online tutoring can be beneficial for school or university students, professionals, and families with children who can no longer attend lessons in schools due to the coronavirus pandemic. While schools are still offering online classes, some students need or want more help with their studies.

Find out why you should get online tutoring.

Superprof

As online tutoring is generally cheaper than face-to-face tutorials, families can on a budget can enjoy virtual and remote lessons. While online tutoring isn't ideal for every subject, the teaching is very well suited to academic subjects and, in many cases, will be just as effective as in-person tutoring.

If you're looking for tutoring of any kind, check out the range of private tutors on Superprof. There are tutors for all levels and subjects from all around the UK and the world. There are three main types of tutoring available and each has its pros and cons, especially during the pandemic.

Face-to-face tutorials were often the preferred tutorial as even though they're often the most expensive, they're also the most cost-effective. In a one-on-one tutorial, the tutor can adapt their teaching approach and pedagogy to the student that they're tutoring. The extra work they put into planning the lessons is reflected in the rates. Sadly, with the restrictions in place regularly changing, it's quite difficult to know how long before you'll have to cancel any regular face-to-face tutorials.

Group tutorials are in a similar situation to face-to-face tutorials during the pandemic. While they are great for those on a budget, regularly gathering in groups isn't advised during the pandemic and a lot of tutors have stopped offering group tutorials or took them online. That said, when you can get them, they're often the cheapest type of tutoring as the cost is shared amongst all the students in attendance.

As we've mentioned, online tutorials have been beneficial for a lot of families during the pandemic. As tutors don't need to travel and can schedule more tutorials each week, they tend to charge less than the face-to-face tutorials. Furthermore, as they take place remotely, they're completely COVID-safe.

Many of the tutors on Superprof offer the first lesson for free so try a few out and see which one is right for you and your budget.
