What do you see when you think of Perth, Western Australia's capital city? Probably quokkas, fairy penguins and dolphins. Certainly Rottnest Island, Fremantle and the Margaret River. What about sports — snorkelling, swimming, surfing, cycling ... martial arts?
Well, martial arts, like karate, MMA, jiu-jitsu, taekwondo, boxing and Muay Thai, probably don't immediately spring to mind — but perhaps they should. For one thing, kickboxing in Perth is more popular than you may realise and a number of champion kickboxers have come out of Perth, including Caley Reece — holder of numerous state and national titles, four world titles and a silver medal at the 2010 World Combat Games.
Combat sports have come a long way since their early days when only skilled warriors would use these unarmed techniques in battle.
These days, you are more likely to see all kinds of people, from kids to adults, participating in boxing and kickboxing classes at the gym for daily fitness, or training in different kicking and punching techniques to build confidence during self-defence lessons.
In addition, there has been a rise in club and academy activity, where beginner through to advanced students can gain fight experience and have fun training in all types of martial art formats — with Muay Thai, taekwondo and Brazilian jiu-jitsu, along with regular boxing and kickboxing becoming increasingly popular amongst students of all ages.
If you've never been to a kickboxing club or a boxing gym, you might be wondering what to expect, and how they differ from the type of gym or fitness centre you're familiar with. And, you may also be wondering where you can learn kickboxing in Perth.
That's what this article is all about!

What to Expect at a Kickboxing or Boxing Gym
In the same way that trainers and students have their own unique styles, you can't say that if you've seen one kickboxing or boxing gym, you've seen them all. And, in the same way, that not all trainers and students are 'a good fit', neither too will every gym suit every boxer or kickboxer.
Let's have a quick look at the different types of gyms or academies, based on their intended purposes.
Mainstream gym or fitness centre
Here, we're looking mainly at franchises — Anytime Fitness, Snap Fitness, Fernwood and so on. These gyms cater for people who want a bit of everything when it comes to training. Their goal is to get fit and maybe lose weight. They might enjoy using the cardio and weight machines a couple of times a week, a workout once a week with a personal trainer and a couple of classes to round it off. The classes may be anything from a spin class to kickboxing. Or you could do a kickboxing class every day if you want to.
Is it for me? Yes. If you like variety and choice in your workout and you enjoy a fun and friendly group atmosphere to help you stay fit.
Boutique gym
The word 'boutique' makes these gyms sound a bit fancy but it really only refers to the fact that what they have on offer, in terms of training and workout programs, tends to be more specialised and perhaps focused only on three or four types of fitness activity.
Being smaller, and independently owned, the equipment might not necessarily be the most modern and you might need to wait a little while during peak times to have your turn. However, what you can expect are trainers and instructors who are experts in their field, with loads of experience.
If your boutique gym happens to revolve around Muay Thai, MMA and Dutch Kickboxing, for example, you can expect the instructors and the other members to be goal-driven and passionate about their sports. It's also unlikely you'll see an aerobics studio but there will be plenty of cardio equipment.
Is it for me? Yes. If you like stability and routine and are goal-driven. Also if you prefer a smaller, friendly membership of like-minded people.

Club or academy
A taekwondo club, karate studio, boxing gym or Muay Thai academy is there for the diehard, passionate-about-my-sport people who want focused training but probably also thrive on the competition side of things as well.
A martial arts club or academy will often, but not always, be quite small and independently owned, however, they can also be large franchises. In both cases, you will often find the best instructors who were at the top of their field and have extensive experience in both training and competing. A club can often be a social hub, but when you're training, you're focused.
Perhaps you've recently moved to Perth, having lived and trained at a kickboxing club in Brisbane. Or, maybe you're looking to join a kickboxing class in Perth after having built your confidence in fun kickboxing challenges in Adelaide?
Let's have a look now at where you can start or continue your journey with kickboxing in Perth.
'Kickboxing Clubs Near Me' — Is Finding a Club That Easy?
Most people instantly go to Google or another similar search engine when they're looking for services. Certainly, entering a search topic like 'kickboxing clubs near me' will generate options — lots and lots of options. You will then spend many hours sifting through these to find a few that fit your needs.
Asking around, and 'word of mouth', also works — unless nobody you know has experience with what you're after.
Another option is to find a site like Australia's Dojo Directory. Here, you can search for kickboxing classes anywhere in Australia by simply entering your location and narrowing your search to the type of martial arts class you're looking for.
The limitation here is that each club or gym is free to put their own listing up but not all will and, more importantly, there's no verification or ranking system. However, it can be a great place to start as long as you use other sources to verify the information and search for testimonials.
All of the above are great ways to help you find a gym, club or academy wherever you live. You can, for example, easily locate a boxing gym in Canberra, or find Muay Thai classes in Melbourne.
