Brisbane is the third most populous city in Australia and thus boasts many opportunities for learning music. And if you want to learn piano, one of the most popular instruments played in Australia, you’ll find plenty of options.

People play the piano for a wide variety of reasons. They might be in a band or orchestra, or aspire to be a solo pianist, they may play the piano as an accompaniment to singing, to develop their music theory, to practice their ear training, or to learn composition.

No matter your reason for playing the instrument, there are teachers available to provide you the music lessons that you need to accomplish these goals.

Regardless of whether you are beginner who has never played a chord, an intermediate student hoping to improve their musicianship and build their repertoire, or an advanced performer who just requires a bit of guidance on how to conquer the music world, Brisbane has what you need.

Here is a list of some great options for learning piano in the city – from private lessons to group classes, for the new student or for those ready to become a professional musician. But first, let's look at the benefits of learning piano.

Why Learn Piano?

Learning piano has numerous benefits. Dr Jennifer MacRitchie, senior research fellow in health and wellbeing at the MARCS Institute at Western Sydney University, has found that it can result in improved working memory function and dexterity.

Playing piano improves memory, recall, and improvisation skills. It also improves coordination, particularly of a pianist’s non-dominant hand. In fact, pianists can even develop ambidexterity, the ability to use both hands equally well. Playing piano can also maintain this dexterity into older age.

It’s never too late to start playing piano. Jennifer Bugos, an assistant professor of music education at the University of South Florida, Tampa, researched the effect of individual piano instruction on adults aged between 60 and 85 years old.

After six months, those who were given piano lessons demonstrated increased memory, verbal fluency, the speed at which they processed information, planning ability, and other cognitive functions, compared with those who were not given lessons.
