Quiz :Australia's Wartime Story 🇦🇺
For Australians, World War II was different from the First World War because the threat came close to home. Japan's rapid advance in early 1942 led to the fall of Singapore and the bombing of Darwin on 19 February, an attack that killed more than 230 people. Japanese midget submarines also entered Sydney Harbour later that year.
In response, Prime Minister John Curtin turned to the United States for support, and Australian forces were brought back from the Middle East to defend the region.
Close to one million Australians served in the armed forces and Merchant Navy during World War II, and roughly 39,000 to 40,000 died.
The war also changed life at home, with rationing, women moving into industry and agriculture, and a much closer relationship with the US.
