When you are learning a language you will need time, patience and a lot of motivation.

If you live in an English speaking country, you probably don't have the immediate need to learn Spanish or any other foreign language for that matter.

And when you travel abroad, it is probable that you will encounter people in the tourism industry who can help you get around without problems.

So, why should you learn Spanish when you can get by without it?

Spanish is the third most popular language to study in the world (behind only English and French) and it has to do with the number of opportunities it provides both at a personal and professional level.

Why Learn Spanish?

Like we stated, there are many reasons why speaking Spanish could prove a great asset for your future. Travelling, working, socialising... speaking a new language allows you to understand a whole new world.

Here are some reasons to learn Spanish:

  1. Spanish is the official language in more than 20 countries, and you can experience them all! If you love travelling, Spanish is probably the most important language to learn. From Mexico to Colombia, Costa Rica and Argentina, there is no doubt that Spanish countries are extremely beautiful and diverse, and have both amazing cities and landscapes as well as extremely rich cultures. The thing about these destinations is that not everyone there can communicate in English so, in order to understand the country and really experience it as a local, you will have to get your Spanish skills polished.
  2. Work opportunities. Both at home and overseas, speaking Spanish will open lots of roles in the professional world. For example, if you go to a Spanish country, you could try to find work as a translator or an English teacher. On the other hand, if you are in Australia you could apply for jobs in companies that run joint ventures with Spanish or Latin American companies.
  3. Speaking Spanish is great for your English. This happens because watching how a certain language works will get you into a mindset of analysing how your own language worked. Even if you learned grammar in school you probably don't remember terms like direct objects, prepositions and subject pronouns. But when you study Spanish it is imperative that you have a clear picture of the grammar of the language. Once you start thinking in this structured way, it will help you re-discover the English language or maybe properly learn it for the first time.
  4. You can enjoy books, movies, series and lots of other cultural things. Once you start speaking and understanding Spanish you will have access to a wide variety of cultural elements that will definitely blow your mind. You will learn more about Spanish countries like Spain, Mexico, Colombia, Argentina and more and the different cultural elements and personalities who come from there. Paintings from Pablo Picasso, Frida Kahlo or Diego Rivera, great works of literature by Miguel de Cervantes, Octavio Paz or Gabriel García Marquez and films from Pedro Almodóvar or Mexicans Guillermo del Toro and Alfonso Cuaron. You won't regret it!
  5. Spanish can be the first of many languages. Since it is relatively easy for English speakers to learn Spanish and it is part of the same language family as French, Italian and Portuguese, this could be a great way for you to jump into learning a third language. Have you ever wondered why people who can speak 4-5 languages, often know languages from the same family? That's the reason why!
  6. It can train your brain to have a better performance. Learning a new language takes hard work, dedication and lots of practice. Good thing is: these skills will go beyond your Spanish lessons and actually become a part of your regular life. Great hack!

Their courses have three levels:
    • Beginning courses under BSSS language eligibility guidelines are intended for students with minimal prior experience in the target language, taking account of three criteria: prior participation in school-based language studies; residency in a country where the target language is used; and use of the target language outside the classroom (for example at home).
    • Courses in languages at continuing level build on prior language learning, generally from high school language courses.
    • Courses in languages at an advanced level build from a broader set of capabilities, generally from experience gained through bilingual and immersion programs or family language background. They refine and extends communication skills so that students can understand and communicate key information and ideas in a broad range of contexts and can interact with a degree of ease and spontaneity.
