Since the discovery of the principle of the modern computer by Alan Turing in 1936, and the creation of the first widespread high-level coding language, FORTRAN,  by John Backus in 1954.

The development of computer systems and programming languages has advanced rapidly over recent years, spreading into many different industries and parts of our day to day lives.

In the modern day, computer science and coding is bringing humanity towards the future with studies and research into the development of robotics and artificial intelligence well underway.

This is the more advanced end of computer programming, but you can also see code at work everywhere you look today, the web sites you browse, the self-service check out machine at Coles, and the ATM you use to get cash out. Clearly computer science and coding are now an integral part of our society and the technology that supports it.

If you are thinking of taking your first step towards learning to code, or you want to further skills and experience you already have, take a look below where we'll talk about why you might want to study coding and the different courses available to you in Perth that can make it happen.

There are many more programming courses on offer in Australia.

What Makes Computer Programming so Desirable to Study?

As previously mentioned, computer programming and software development have rapidly become integral parts of our daily lives in the modern world.

This increased global demand for reliable computer and software systems in turn creates a demand for people who have the skills and experience to program and run them.

In Australia alone, between 2016 and 2019, over 33,000 jobs were created in the computer science industry making it one of the fastest growing occupations in the country.

This of course means that employment prospects for a fresh computer programming graduate are some of the best, allowing you to quickly secure a job and build a successful career shortly after you leave school or university.

There are many career pathways to take once you have completed your studies in coding and programming, here are just a few of the areas you could find yourself working in:

  • Software Development
  • Game and Mobile App Development
  • Advanced Programming of Robotics
  • Machine Learning with A.I
  • Data Analysis

This will of course depend on your personal interests and what aspects of programming that you are most passionate about. If you do intend to study with a training program or at university and wish to make a career from programming, here are some of the benefits you can expect to experience throughout your professional life:

  • A plethora of job opportunities spanning different industries
  • A stable and secure, well paying career
  • The opportunity to be part of the latest research into advanced technology
  • Flexibility in work and hours, options to work from home and freelance

One of the main draws for students looking to start a career in computer science is the possibility of working for yourself as a freelancer; The chance to build your own business and become your own boss.

As you can see, learning how to code and program can open many doors of opportunity for you in your professional life, and could lead you to study or work in different Australian cities like Adelaide or Sydney.

Lets dive in to the different courses you can take to make your dream reality.

Computer Programming Courses Available in Perth

There are many different institutes and education providers that offer courses and classes in computer science and coding. Here we'll talk about a few of these including, University of Western Australia (UWA), Curtin University, The Hacking School, Code Master Institute, and TAFE WA.

Boot Camps

Boot camps are intensive training programs taught over 12-24 weeks to give students an in depth and comprehensive knowledge of computer programming in a specific area, such as web development or data science. Some of the best coding boot camps on offer to you in Perth are:

  • University of Western Australia - Full stack web developer course. 24 weeks duration with part time available to allow you to work and study simultaneously. Learn with a variety of coding language such as HTML5, CSS3, Java, Bootstrap, and more, and build a portfolio of you work before you graduate.
  • Code Master Institute - Full stack web developer course. 12 weeks duration with face to face lessons. Work closely with your instructors and learn a variety of coding languages. This boot camp also provides you with a laptop for the duration and includes yoga and health sessions throughout.
  • The Hacking School - A variety of boot camp training programs on offer e.g. 13-week full stack web development, 24 week cybersecurity, and 24 week data science courses. This involves a low student-teacher ratio in regular classes and individual discussion sessions with your teacher.

Online Courses

There are also a number of training programs of different kinds available for you to study online wherever you are based in Western Australia, Perth, or the rest of the country. Studying online can save you time and money travelling to and from your university or school, and allow you to work from the comfort of your own home on your own computer and equipment. Some online programming courses that might interest you are:

  • Australian Institute of ICT - A full stack web developer course. You will become a certified web developer upon completion of this flexible course that lasts between 4 and 6 months and has no pre-requisites.
  • UpSkilled - Certificate IV in Information Technology. Run by a nationally recognized training organization, this course will teach you about how to develop software and websites with different coding languages, allowing you plenty of career options post-graduation.

There are many other online courses available to you in Perth from universities and institutes all over Australia. Any course that is taught via online classes would be open for you to enrol in.

For example, La Trobe University in Melbourne offers an online-based bachelor and associate degree of applied information technology that is open for residents of Perth to enroll in.

University Degrees

Several of Perth and Western Australia's universities have a number of undergraduate and postgraduate degrees that you can take part in to further your studies in computer science and programming after you have finished high school. Here are some of the available courses:

University of Western Australia BA - UWA offers two degree pathways to easily become a computer programmer. These are a bachelor degree in Computer Science and a Bachelor degree in Data Science. Both degrees last 3 years of full time study, and require an ATAR of 75 to be accepted.

University of Western Australia MA - UWA also offers a postgraduate study option as a master degree of information technology. This degree will teach you the skills and knowledge you need to become a fully-fledged computer science specialist, with experience in different fields of IT and programming. The course fees are subsidized by the government making it cheaper for you and other eligible students, and it has a satisfaction rate of 92%.

Curtin University - This university runs an undergraduate computer science degree, lasting 3 years full time. As well as using your ATAR results, Curtin uses 'Credit for Recognised Learning' which allows you to use previous units you have studied elsewhere as credit for your degree. Another pathway to a Curtin university degree is by completing the two stages of an IT diploma at Curtin college prior to your application.

Individual Lessons with a Private Tutor

Perhaps you don't want to commit to a programming boot camp or a university degree just yet, but you still want to learn to ropes of coding and software development. Maybe you are already undertaking a course of study but want some extra help and education outside of your school or university.

If this is the case, you might consider working with a private tutor to help you achieve your goals. Private tutors can be flexible to your personal schedule, so if you are busy with work or your personal life it can be very useful to have a tutor who can arrange your classes for time that suits you.

There are a few different places you can look to find a reliable private tutor in your local area of Perth:

  • Teachers from schools and universities may offer their services as tutors outside of their regular working hours.
  • Some institutes may offer you access to private tutoring as part of your course - UWA's Web Developer boot camp does this for example.
  • Superprof helps you to easily access thousands of experienced private tutors in Perth and around Australia, bringing you quality education no matter where you are located. Find the best tutor for your needs by searching through the web site for coding and programming tutors.

You may be looking for programming lessons for your children as well as yourself. If this is the case, then working with a private tutor is one of the best ways to go.

If they are just starting to learn, introduce them to a game called  'Scratch' which teaches kids the foundations of computer programming in an easy way, almost like using Lego blocks to put code together.

Many private tutors would be happy to teach your children the basics of coding, preparing them for more in depth studies at a later age.

Boot camps for kids are also available at places like 'CodeKids' in Perth, an institute that aims to prepare young students of today for the future world of technology and computing.

These are just some of the many options that are open for you to try as a student of programming and computing. Be sure to do plenty of research into the courses that you are interested in. Not every course layout is right for everyone, some students prefer to learn at a slower rate than intensive boot camps allow.

No matter what your style of learning or where you want to take the skills and knowledge you learn, the right course of study for you is waiting to be found.
