About Ryan
I am a first-year student at the University of Adelaide doing a Bachelor of Mathematical Sciences. I graduated last year in 2017 after completing Physics (18.5), Mathematical Methods (18.1), Specialist Maths (16.7) and Chemistry (16.6), giving me a final ATAR of 96.55.
I have given many private lessons in maths over the past year, but not professionally, as this has only been to people whom I am friends with, or family friends. I have not given any professional, paid lessons.

My teaching method is to make maths and science as realistically interesting as it can be. I understand people either do or don’t have an interest in how or why maths is useful, but I make my best effort to first point out the fundamental beauty of maths and science in our world. I like to do this with many thought experiments for students as I explain the concept(s) behind the material, which hopefully lets a lot more “click”. I realise the importance of engaging the student to actively think and be aware of what they’re doing, so I also like to ask the student questions about what they’re thinking and why. This is all to get concepts understood, hopefully effectively enough for the student to solve problems with the methods and understanding they have just learnt. I like to prepare questions in advance or on the spot, depending on whether I know what the student might struggle with, or is struggling with currently.
A personal addition to what I do during lessons is bring snacks - particularly small chocolates, as chocolate has been proven to actually help the brain retain information while studying. This is usually m&m’s, not particularly to reward the student, but also to help motivate and aid in getting them thinking and understanding what I am trying to teach.
Towards the end of lessons, I am sure to ask final questions for the student for them to prove their understanding of the content, and also to give me an idea on what I might need to come back to next time if something still doesn’t make sense to them.
