I base my teaching on each individual students needs and ability. I encourage exploration of new ideas and new techniques. I aim for a total understanding of the instrument and the theories behind music. I also like to keep it fun and entertaining for the student/students.
I am a professional musician with over 45 years experience 25 of those years overseas and touring the world. I play Jazz, Classical, blues, acoustic and also play the 21 string Harp Guitar and ukelele. I have performed with a huge range of artists such as James Morrison, Cliff Richard, Galapagos Duck and Barney Kessel to The Australian chamber orchestra and the BBC concert orchestra. I have a BA Honours degree in music as well as a Diploma of music. I have a wealth of experience to share with any pupils who may wish to expand their guitar skills and expand their their minds.
There may be an extra charge if I have to travel to the lesson, but I will keep this cost to a minimum
Tony comes from a family of musicians, a Jazz dynasty. His father is legendary Aussie Trumpet player Bob Barnard his uncle was Len Barnard, famous drummer and raconteur. His Brother Adam is a well known Sydney drummer and his Cousin Rebecca is a famous Melbourne singer and Television personality. Tony’s Grandparents also had a dance band in the 30s and 40s. His Grandmother Kath Barnard being one of the first female band leaders in Australia.
Tony has recently returned to Australia after 25 years in the UK, where he performed regularly at Ronnie Scott’s and other top London jazz venues, whilst abroad Tony performed all over the UK, USA, France, Canada, Italy, Belgium, Singapore, Germany, Turkey, Scotland, Ireland, Denmark, Sweden, New Zealand, Holland, United Arab Emirates, Fiji, New Caledonia, Vanuatu, Samoa, Tonga, Australia, England, Greece, and even tiny Samurai island (New Guinea) Amongst others.
Before leaving for the UK Tony had appeared at most of Australia's jazz festivals, accompanied visiting jazz and international jazz and show-biz stars, won 'best guitarist' polls, formed Australia's first 5-guitar big band 'Interplay', led his own bands, and worked as musical director on cruise ships.
Tony has a diverse range of albums to his name (43 and counting) ranging from jazz to blues, classical, world and Ambient, and has played with a wide range of artists including The Australian Chamber Orchestra, The BBC Concert Orchestra, The Ronnie Scott's jazz orchestra, The Dubai Philharmonic strings, Barney Kessel, Earl Hines, Nat Adderley, Nancy Wilson, Dave Liebman, Keely Smith, Buddy Greco, John Hendricks, Barry Humphries, Howard Alden, Dan Barrett, Cliff Richard, Rufus Reid, Jim Mullen, Curtis Stigers, Stephen Bennett, Muriel Anderson, John Doan, Bob Barnard, John Sangster, Don Burrows, George Golla, Don Andrews, Billy Field, Louis Stewart, Georgie Fame, Kevin Spacey, Ike Isaacs, The Inkspots, Ronnie Corbett, Clare Teal , Jacqui Dankworth, Claire Martin, Scarlet Strallen, Peter Grant, Marti Pellow, Tony Hadley, John Colianni, Monica Mancini, Diz Disley, Galapagos Duck, Deana Martin(yes! Dean’s daughter), Travis Bowman, Matt Thomas, Toured Europe with the Original London West End Rat Pack show and was the resident guitarist of the Ronnie Scott's Jazz Orchestra for some 8 years. He has composed for and appeared in television and stage shows. Tony won the international song writing competition in 2013 with his piece “Bunyips”. Tony is also one of a handful of people worldwide, who has mastered the 21 string Harp Guitar and has recently released several solo CDs playing mostly originals. Tony regularly does workshops and concerts in the USA on Harp guitar annually. He also plays 8 string ukelele and harp ukelele. Tony is endorsed by Emerald Guitars
