About Tommaso

I have a PhD and I am a Lecturer in Research Methods at City, University of London, with over five years’ experience teaching and assessing students in data analysis, psychology, and neuroscience. My role has included delivering lectures and seminars, guiding students through statistical concepts, and marking a wide range of coursework—from data analysis reports to essays.

My teaching philosophy is centred on supporting each student’s individual learning journey. I focus on helping you not only meet deadlines and achieve your academic goals, but also build the critical thinking and analytical confidence that lasts well beyond exams. I aim to create a supportive, engaging, and encouraging learning environment that makes complex material clear and manageable.

Alongside teaching, I work as a researcher and have published in international peer-reviewed journals and presented at leading academic conferences. I am also an Associate Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (AFHEA), a recognition of my commitment to high-quality university teaching.

Whether you are new to data analysis, preparing for exams, or working on advanced research projects, I can help you gain the tools and understanding to succeed.

Data analysis doesn’t have to be intimidating—it can actually become inspiring. My lessons are designed to make even the most complex concepts clear, practical, and relevant to your goals.

I believe that motivation and ambition are the keys to progress, and I support both by offering personalised guidance and constructive feedback to help you build real confidence in your skills.

My approach combines coaching and practical application: I focus on the specific areas you want to strengthen, break down abstract ideas into concrete, easy-to-grasp examples, and adapt to your individual learning style. Lessons are interactive, engaging, and designed to turn challenges into opportunities for growth.

I also provide tailored support for:

Assignments and coursework (reports, essays, presentations)

Thesis and dissertation preparation (experimental design, data analysis, interpretation, and academic writing)

My lessons are especially valuable for students in business, economics, psychology, and social sciences, but I also welcome learners from other disciplines who want to master data analysis as a transferable skill.

  • Can you tell us about your first experience with data analysis?

My first hands-on experience with data analysis was during my bachelor's internship as a research assistant at the University of Amsterdam, where I collaborated with two research groups publishing one paper. I used R to analyse the data and performed advanced statistical modelling. This showed me how data can reveal patterns and insights, and how useful data analysis is to gain insights.
  • What developments in the field of data analysis have inspired you the most?

The integration of advanced statistical analysis and modelling for big data analysis has inspired me and my career. During my research positions, I saw firsthand how advanced techniques such as hierarchical Bayesian models and GLMMs provide deeper insights into complex phenomena.
  • Explain your expertise, your interest in data analysis, and its broader impact on different fields.

I specialize in advanced statistical methods (like GLMMs), hierarchical Bayesian modelling, and neuroimaging data analysis. My interest refers to how data can solve real-world problems, and how data analysis provides new perspectives and insights. I have tutored students from psychology, economy, medical and social sciences and they were all amazed by the powerful new ideas derived from data analysis.
  • Are there any role models in data analysis or related fields who inspire you?

I admire researchers like Richard McElreath and Eric Jan Wagenmakers for how they strive to explain complex statistical topics in a manageable way that everyone can understand.
  • Share a memorable anecdote from your teaching or research experience related to data analysis.

While supervising a Master's thesis, I guided a student through their first data analysis project. Initially overwhelmed, she later developed confidence and competence through our session on data analysis. Seeing her growth reinforced my belief in the transformative power of effective mentorship and guidance.
  • What would you say to a student who finds data analysis intimidating or overly technical?

I'd reassure them that data analysis is a skill anyone can learn with the right mindset and guidance. I emphasize starting with simple tools and hands-on projects, better if something meaningful for the students like an assignment. I like to start by explaining the why and what the point of doing all this is. It is incredibly rewarding when the student starts figuring out how to approach a problem independently.
  • What other passions or skills do you bring to your role as a tutor?

Apart from data analysis, I'm passionate about psychology and neuroscience, and I have been teaching for 5 years as a Visiting Lecturer at the University of London and at different institutions. Also, I have been teaching many topics, from music to martial arts, and I am capable of creating a tailored learning program for each student.
  • What makes you a 'Superprof' in data analysis?

My unique blend of academic expertise, practical experience, and passion for teaching defined my role as Superprof. I've successfully tutored over 50 students, tailoring my methods to individual needs. My strong technical foundation and ability to make complex concepts relatable have earned me excellent reviews on platforms like Superprof.
