I have been a bilingual teacher for a long time. I am a native Chinese speaker and also an advanced English user. I teach both Chinese and English. I have been interested in second or foreign language learning and teaching, which is quite different from first/native language learning. Therefore, the teaching methods should be catered to specific learning contexts.
In the current era of globalisation, I encourage my students to focus more on second/foreign language use or communication skills than on pronunciations or accents. I always tell my students not to be ashamed by their second language accents as long as the communication is smooth or the information can be successfully conveyed.
I also keep reminding my students of the fact that they do not need to know every single Chinese grammar or language knowledge. They should focus on learning Chinese knowledge that is important in their area. This is why there are different types of Chinese teaching such as business Chinese, academic Chinese, etc.
