Carmel is a respected tutor in our community. She is highly recommended for her commitment and the quality of her lessons. An excellent choice to progress with confidence.
About Carmel
I aim to provide tutoring that is supportive, encouraging and flexible. I am a capable, reliable, friendly and professional person who loves learning. Learning should be fun and engaging. There are many ways to learn, and I like being able to explore new ideas and information through my profession.
Everyone is capable of learning and developing their knowledge and abilities; no one is "not good enough" or "not smart enough". I have high expectations for student learning. Having high expectations and standards for learning outcomes aims to help individuals achieve their best. These expectations are not unrealistic or unattainable; they are about building confidence and going beyond what we think we are capable of.
QUALIFICATIONS & PRACTICE
I have a qualified, accredited and registered secondary (high school) teacher. I also have university qualifications in Community Welfare and Youth Work, and Theology.
There are four areas of learning that I like to focus on, which reflect current approaches to learning:
- Knowledge and Understanding
- Inquiry Skills
- Communication Skills
- Critical and Creative Thinking Skills
Both the Australian Curriculum and NSW Standards require a focus on developing knowledge and skills, with a ratio of between 1:3 and 1:4. Skills are developed so that they can be transferrable and long-lasting; these skills should carry over into many areas of learning and life. Current learning theories are centred around preparing students for the future. The areas of learning that I have chosen to focus on are developed from 21st Century Skills and Gardner’s Five Minds for the Future.
I have a thorough knowledge of the Australian Curriculum and the knowledge and skills to help students excel in learning and prepare for higher education. Most content for lessons will come from curriculum documents, as well as the achievement standards and learning outcomes that Australian schools expect for students. I have connections with those who work in universities and I have worked with many senior students in Years 11 and 12, so I also understand what is required for students seeking to complete higher education.

FIRST LESSON
In our first lesson, we would meet and chat about what you want to achieve in your learning. I would want to get to know you a little, assess your learning needs and then set goals or an outline for future learning.
Having samples of your classwork would provide me with some perspective and understanding about your current abilities. Alternatively, I may ask you to complete a sample task so that I can assess areas where you work well and areas you could improve on. If it is relevant to the learning you are aiming to focus on, I may ask to see feedback on recent assessment tasks or reports so that I can understand your learning needs better.
Goal setting allows you to manage your own progress; to take more responsibility for your own learning. Goals would be reviewed regularly to ensure that they are being achieved.
Throughout lessons, my students are asked to provide feedback on their learning and participate in the contribution of ideas and planning for their future learning.
SERVICES
Learning is tailored to your needs. It can be adjusted to support and extend your knowledge and skills. Any workload connected to our lessons can also be adjusted to ensure that you still have time to participate in your extra-curricular commitments.
I can provide homework help, assignment proof-reading, extension or special interest learning, and cross-curricular skill development, in addition to subject specific learning support.
I can arrange for shared access to an online learning platform, such as a Google Classroom, to support lessons. This can be a place to access learning support and receive timely feedback. This is an option; it is not something that is required if it not something that you would benefit from.
I have strong ICT skills and am familiar with various devices and operating systems, including both Microsoft and Apple systems. I encourage to the use, where appropriate, of devices for learning.
There is also a benefit for more tactile forms of learning, so I always like to incorporate learning activities that encourage students show their understanding in different ways.
