About Elijah
I am an engineer with 2 years of experience in the renewable energy field as a project engineer/business process engineer. I am currently doing my undergraduate engineering thesis at UNSW on bioenergy in Africa.
I have tutored a Preliminary HSC student for 6 months on physics and chemistry, mentored interns at my company and have given lessons to different types of people in the renewable industry ranging from salespeople to engineers returning to the industry after several years. The Preliminary HSC student I taught increased his physics and chemistry marks by more than 20% through learning preparation techniques and strategies for tackling exams I developed when I was sitting the HSC myself. The interns I mentored are now proper employees of the company and have learned various softwares/skills such as Microsoft Excel, AutoCAD and flowcharting. The renewable energy industry members I taught found my teaching methods "easy to digest" and have even gone as for to suggest that I do a TED talk (maybe one day haha).
My hobbies include coding, helping out the community as a volunteer member of the NSW State Emergency Service (SES) and watching science and technology videos on youtube (I have a LOT of great channels to suggest if you're interested).

I am a big fan of Microsoft Office (Excel especially) since it has many applications (technical simulation, finance tracking and making marketing material) which can be automated. By coupling sophisticated backend calculations with a user-friendly interface, I have created a whole eco-system of tools and templates which my company uses for daily operations such as proposal making and techno-economic forecasting.
Students who are interested in automating their business or personal processes using Microsoft Excel will benefit from these lessons.
I am a problem-solver by nature and thus students who have a specific problem they want help with or a specific thing they want to build will learn the fastest with my teaching methods. Furthermore, students who prefer a casual and personal learning environment with plenty of hands-on experience and feedback will find my teaching style effective and enjoyable.
A lesson structure might look like:
- Student explains problem/project and their progress thus far
- I explain/describe all relevant concepts/skills/examples using analogies, diagrams, real-life examples and personal experience
- I perform the solution/skills while giving heavy commentary and explanations
- I let the student attempt the problem/project while providing the appropriate guidance (using the student's response to previous explanations as a point of reference) and feedback
- Repeat the previous step with each iteration providing less guidance to build student confidence and autonomy
- When I deem the student to be sufficiently competent, I will assign them a reasonably difficult but achieveable task to be completed with no supervision.
- After the task is done, I will provide comprehensive feedback
- I will finish off by explaining the real-world applications and value of what the student has learnt
With teaching, I aim to give the student the tools to not only solving their current problems, but also making it easier to solve future problems. Basically, rather than giving the student fish (the answers), I try to teach the student how to fish (the mindset and strategy to get the answers themselves) AND help them become eager to fish (the desire to self-learn).
