About Karen
He ika kai ake i raro,
He rāpaki ake i raro. (Every journey starts by taking gradual steps at the beginning. Let's climb the learning journey hill together.)
Ko Hikurangi, ko Maungatere ngā maunga
Ko Waiapu, ko Rakahuri ngā awa.
Ko Ngati Porou, ko Kai Tahu ōku iwi.
Ko Karen tōku ingoa.
I graduated from the University of Canterbury in 1988 with a double major in German and Japanese as well as gaining an A+ in Te reo Māori Stage One. In 1992 I had a nervous breakdown. Having a mental illness has never prevented me from reaching out for help and learning to get support from others in particular my teachers. I learnt basic te reo at Ngā Hau E Wha and Onuku marae from1990 and taught Japanese at both locations. In 1992 I gained a certificate in Advanced Japanese and Tourism. I lived and worked in Japan in 1988 and in 1992. In 2003 I completed the Cambridge CELTA and postgraduate papers in linguistics at Christchurch Polytechnic in teaching ESOL. I then taught ESOL at Christchurch English Language School and Aspiring Language College in 2004. From 2005 to 2009 I worked in various schools in South Korea teaching school children and adults English. I studied te reo Māori at levels 2, 3 and 4 at Christchurch Polytechnic during 2015 and completed Treo Level 3 at Ara in 2021 and Huia o te Reo Level 4 at Te Wānanga o Raukawa 2024 with A+ passes. I am very passionate about helping people achieve their goals in learning te reo Māori. Learning foreign languages has broadened my horizons in meeting so many wonderful people and learning te reo has given me a greater sense of identity and belonging and renewed connection with my extended whānau and tūpuna. I'd love to help you on your journey to enjoy learning te reo as much as I do. Nau Mai, Piki Mai, Haere Mai.
