The methodology of the lessons will depend on your level. Before the start of our first lesson, you will receive all of my chess notes, which they contain a step by step guide with a lot of diagrams and hence they can be read much faster and easier than any chess book. They contain the most powerful and little known chess traps (you will even beat chess masters), as well as key middle game and endgame ideas. We will also play a few assessment games together so that I can assess your weaknesses and needs. In addition to that you will receive my specially designed assessment test with 100 specially selected chess problems. I will calculate your results and weaknesses and hence I will design a specially selected training program according to your needs. You will receive a USB stick with specially material, that will boost your understanding of the game.
The young student will learn what is tactics and strategy and what is the difference between them, a knowledge of paramount importance later in life. Learning to play the endgames well is crucial for a beginner, as they are a simplified version of the game and one of the first things that I teach my students. Elementary tactical ideas such as forks, pins, x-rays, weak back rank and double attack will be taught with key examples taken from all stages of the game (openings, middlegames and endings) that allow the student to learn fast and efficiently. Check out below a very small sample from my notes aimed mainly for intermediate players, but perhaps of interest to players of all levels:

I always encourage my students to be as interactive as possible, to be frank with themselves and the tutor, to work hard, to analyze a lot their games but also the games of other people, to learn from their mistakes, to look for individual mistakes in their games but also to look for mistakes in their more general way of thinking, as well as to be disciplined and to practice a lot by playing many chess games with opponents of various strengths. I will provide you with general tips and rules that will drastically improve your game. "If you find a good move, look for a better one", Lasker highlighted. I also suggest my students to pay major attention to their king safety during all stages of the game. Even during the endgame it is possible to be checkmated! During the opening it is important to castle early and bring your king to safety, as the king is safer near the corner of the board, however advanced players will prefer in some positions to keep their castling options open and delay castling (castling king-side or queen-side) so that they create uncertainty to their opponent about their future intentions. These and many other winning tips (general and more specific) will help you to improve within weeks. Perhaps the most important advice is to keep your pieces as developed and as active as attainable while you are looking for tactical (short term) or strategic (long term plans) opportunities. Having a plan is the most important advice not only for chess, but also for any other endeavor of life.
If you are keen enough, I am here to coordinate this complex approach. The very serious formal chess training, which I offer includes the systematic study of key endgame patterns, key middle-game tactical and strategic ideas as well as a detailed study of openings and opening patterns. I am an expert in the most openings and I can advise you of the best opening moves or strategy for a large number of chess openings. For example, I can advise you of which opening moves to avoid with black or white. I had spent endless hours studying unsound openings when I was a kid, only to realize at an older age that I needed to switch openings. Hence, all of these hours that I had spent studying the openings were wasted- if only I had a good trainer to inform me about that! You can follow my professional and sophisticated opening repertoire and improve your results effortless. I always recommend my students to understand the position they get out of the opening so that they avoid unpleasant surprises during the middle game, but also to study the endgames well so that they can save countless of middle game positions.
You will learn rare opening weapons and rare powerful professional opening and middle game traps, as well as key winning endgame and middlegame strategies and tactics. My most well kept secrets and opening analysis. Neglected but powerful chess opening moves. You will learn hundreds of opening traps, which may be used for fun in blitz games or even more seriously against chess masters. It is no exaggeration to say that I have used almost any opening during my chess career, and hence I will be able to give you a good advice for your favorite openings.
Chess engines, is a topic that most trainers avoid to talk about. I will show you that although the chess engines play somewhat better than humans, they are far from perfect. I will show you their weaknesses and their strengths and how you are supposed to use them and interpret their analysis output. Don't forget that chess engines are a human creation and as such they are far from perfect compared with the complexity of the game. I will demonstrate to you only the information that is vital for you to know, so that you can avoid endless circles around superficial knowledge, that will cost you years of time and monetary expenses.
I am an expert in the Sicilian defence, and I will provide you with a step by step guide on how to play the best variations with the white pieces. I will demonstrate explicitly the best openings to play with white and black pieces. How to play against the french defence, the modern defence or the Caro Kann, other powerful systems against the Sicilian, and of course I am an expert in the English opening 1.c4, which I suggest you to play with white, as you will avoid the dangerous Nimzo-indian and Grunfeld defences. Black will go often for a king's indian, but I will demonstrate how to play against it and obtain an advantage. I will show you how to get an advantage in all possible variations against the Slav defence. I will provide you with a lot of written material for almost every opening. I will let you chose your favourite openings but I can only suggest the most sound ones for you. I will show you how to get an advantage against the Pirc defence, the French defence, the Alekhine defence the Caro Kann defence and the Modern defence. After 1...e5 (the so called "open" openings), I will show you how to play multiple winning systems both with the white and the black pieces, (it will also depend on your preferences and chess style), but keep always in mind to avoid heavy theoretical systems, especially if you are a beginner. I will explain to you that after 1.e4, black has only two moves that allow him to play without a disadvantage namely 1...e5 and 1...c5. Advanced players, have no option but to be more and more careful as they improve.
There are advantageous ways to look at the chessboard and gain insights hidden to other approaches. I will show you these general ways so that you will improve:
1)Your Openings
2)Your Tactical ability
3)Your Strategic ideas
4)Your Endgame techniques
That would be a quick fix.
Opening systems with White that I recommend include:
1) The Sicilan 3.Bb5 (after 1.e4 c5, 2.Nf3 Nc6 or after 2...d6)
2) I will demonstrate how to get an advantage against the Slav (1.d4 d5 2.c4 c6)
3) The Spanish 1.e4 e5, 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Bb5
4) Certain systems that guarantee an opening advantage for white against any other move other than 1...e5 and 1...c5 of black after 1.e4, such as against the Pirc Defence.
5) The English Opening with white 1.c4

With the black pieces openings that I recommend include the Najdorf Sicilian, The Grunfeld defence, the Symmetrical English opening (1.c4 c5) as well as many other more defensive systems such as the Petroff Defense, or the Marshall Gambit. After 1.e4 e5 we can build a solid opening repertoire for black. Similarly after 1.d4 d5, or 1.Nf3 d5 or 1.c4 e6. We will not underestimate rare openings such as 1.b3. I will show you how to play against them! It will also depend on how much theory you are willing to study, but I will never recommend a bad opening only to avoid opening theory such as the Caro Kann or the Scandinavian. You are free to play them though, if you wish!
We will play with each other key pawn, rook, minor pieces and queen endings and we will look at all major variations. I will provide the feedback required for improvement. Myself, I am an expert in endgames and quite frequently (but not always), I use the strategy of obtaining an ending soon after the opening, and beat my opponent effortlessly without the burden of opening theory or risking too much with a dubious attack. However, keep in mind that playing aggressively is the only recommended option in a large number of chess positions, and you must always be prepared for it, as I always recommend my students to avoid passive defence, and being afraid of their opponent more than they should.
A factor, which is often underestimated is the general mental and physical condition of a chess player, but even here I can suggest you important tips about sleep, nutrition as well as general physical and mental health, all of which not only will boost your chess strength but also your general well being. Chess like life can be a hard game if you are unprepared and hence apart from knowledge and wisdom, brainpower plays also a major role. This is the main reason of why players retire after a certain age from top level competitive chess like Kasparov or Karpov. However, with rigorous preparation and training it is always possible to achieve a lot. Don't always blame your results, or luck. Blame your training instead!
If you are a chess master I can assist you in your opening preparation by providing detailed opening analysis of certain variations, as well as I can assist you with my wisdom in many other aspects of the game! Being a top GM doesn't mean that you can't improve some aspects of your game, as even top players make many mistakes. They even choose unsound openings frequently, however their overall moves of the game are more accurate.
In addition to the previous tasks, we can play training games together, or I can analyse professionally your games and provide you with feedback and useful suggestions for improvement. I can also provide you with live commentary and coaching while I observe you playing with an other opponent! At the end of the day you must also be free to decide about what you like/ you don't like me to do and take responsibility of your chess training! Have a responsible attitude like your good trainer does, and together we can improve you fast.
During all of our sessions, I will always keep a keen eye on your weaknesses, and according to my vast experience I will provide you with the required material that will help you to fix them fast.
Finally, I would like to highlight that I hold a Masters Degree in Theoretical Physics from the University of Sussex, as well as a PhD degree in Physics from Oxford. I have worked as a tutor and researcher in Physics in many top UK Universities, teaching Physics, Mathematics and Astronomy. My main research interest is Cosmology and black holes, but I have also worked on some models of quantum gravity. I have an experience in tutoring many young people and kids Physics, Mathematics and Science. I have a keen interest in Astronomy and teaching the general public about the wonders of our Universe! I consider chess being a small model Universe with its own laws, which nevertheless reflect the beauty of the real Universe, (as chess is inevitably a part of the Universe).
