About Ben
As a kid I took piano and guitar lessons in the 90's and have been making music ever since. My first teacher was approachable and versatile and inspiring, and I strive to be the same. After high school I studied music at Vanier College in Montreal: jazz guitar, classical and jazz piano, music history, ear training, theory and composition. After all that learning, one question became more and more important to me: if I was to make any kind of music, what would it sound like? At that point I gravitated back towards some of the folk-based music I'd always loved and began the work of developing my own musical 'voice'. I started writing, performing, forming groups, recording, producing, touring. Over time I've developed a great interest in communicating, teaching, and sharing what I can with other aspiring creators. And by pursuing that interest I've developed a knack for making complex and subtle ideas plain and useful. If you want to make making music a part of your life, I want to help you.

I approach each student as an important individual. The first thing I do is take some time finding out what it is you hope to learn. Some people already have a clear idea, for others it's more fuzzy. Some people have favourite artists they'd love to emulate, others like "all music" or just aren't comfortable saying right away (which is fine too). I may be the right tutor for you if you're... - a beginner or intermediate player with an interest in some form of folk, folk-rock, or folk-pop - someone with an interest in songwriting. For instance, if you want to learn how to write an interesting chord progression, or take an existing chord progression and improve it, I'm your guy. For beginners, I recommend a half-hour lesson ($30). For intermediate+ players (especially those pursuing songwriting) a longer lesson may be beneficial.
