About Melia
I attended a performing arts high school to study writing and publishing, and have won multiple contests and awards for my work both within the school and through other programs. I am currently pursuing a degree in Linguistics with a minor in Creative Writing. Outside of school, I had the fortune to attend a workshop at the literary magazine Creative Nonfiction, which was founded by Lee Gutkind.
I received first place in a poetry competition judged by Rebecca Lindenberg, and I additionally received first place in a creative nonfiction competition judged by Roxane Gay.
My poetry has appeared in pacificREVIEW, Persephone's Daughters, Mass Poetry, Soundings East, and others. My creative nonfiction has appeared in The Lindenwood Review. This past October, I won a scary short story contest hosted by Antonym Lit.

I strongly believe that teaching should be all about conversation -- and this is doubly true for writing! Since creative writing is such a personal endeavor, I think that it is less about teaching strict rules to be followed and more about talking over the intent of the writing and suggesting different methods through which one could achieve these intentions. I will strive to address grammatical concerns, but apart from those rules, I will structure each lesson around the needs of the student. It is more about helping the student find their strengths and passions within the wide world of creative writing.
