Some people think that getting private tutoring is for parents who have high-paying jobs and can thus find the time and extra resources for supplementary lessons for their children a couple of hours a week. Not true at all!

The rising number of tutors who are offering their tutoring services to children of any age and any year of school in subjects as diverse as English, maths, and chemistry will really attest to this.

Finding a teacher to give their time for some private tuition for a few hours a week is becoming more and more viable, and there are sometimes even free options for parents who are watching the hip pocket. Primary, secondary, or university subjects can really be enhanced when you learn with a private tutor or tutors.

Now tutoring has in fact existed for centuries, before learning in a traditional school was even really common. Nowadays, in bigger cities like Sydney NSW or Melbourne VIC, students will find that they will be able to spend their time efficiently with many great tutoring centres around.

An even more viable alternative for learning with private tutors is the online route!

The art of education has come a long way and services many different skills now compared to ancient Greece, the Renaissance, or even the 20th century. The attitude of students in Australia is vastly different and we live online in a digital age, so why not learn online as well?

Parents who want their child or children to get ahead of the rest of their year level or boost their prospects of being able to find great paying jobs later should really consider online private tuition. This is the best way to enhance their lessons and learning at primary school or secondary school since the lessons can be adapted in so many ways to suit the student.

Nowadays, there are also hundreds of great private tutoring agencies out there that check the English and skills credentials of those who they employ. You will find that going through one such agency is one of the best ways to ensure quality teaching.

But what if you really want a private and personalised experience in your online tutoring? And what if the right tutor isn't geographically near you?

Fear not, for video calling and video conferencing have made online private tuition more accessible than ever, so you can work with tutors in Sydney, Melbourne, Australia-wide, or even worldwide!

It's important to note there are some issues that may persist when taking online lessons, but they shouldn't steer you clear of this great resource.

Benefits of Online Tutoring Research

Tutoring and private teaching jobs have really taken off since the advent of video and chat apps that let a child or adult connect online with teachers. Many of these are free, which students of all years will know means there are fewer overheads involved.

If you are a freelance tutor in Australia, engineering just the right balance and method for delivery of each lesson can be the best way to make sure a class is effectively adapted for online classes. If you are freelancing also, knowing your target market - maths, English, chemistry, primary school, university etc - is one of the best ways of making the most of your job.

There has been a relatively large amount of online tutoring conducted given the short amount of time that we have been able to do this, but we can nevertheless cite the above facts with confidence because of the fact that so many people opt for this method now.

Students of all years and every age have been given surveys in tutoring agencies to see how they felt about getting help with their subjects online, with aggregate scores being taken as an assumption of overall attitude towards online learning, and teachers and private tutors using this information to adapt their lesson planning.

Learning online has proven research

Maths, English, and Science (chemistry, biology, and engineering) students were all tested, and 96% of students were cited as saying they felt more capable of completing their assignments with online and video tutoring help. Whilst this did not compare to the impacts of learning in person, it did show that there was a positive correlation for students that showed the desired results could still be achieved

Cherie Mazer was the one who undertook this research, so read all of her findings to get a deeper view of what they actually involved if you want to get the full scoop on online tutoring.

The Proof of the Efficacy of Online Tutoring

Not too long ago, nobody would have dreamed that learning could take place anywhere in the world from the comfort of your home. And it wasn't that long ago either that we really had to find shortcuts like shorthand and messenger services to communicate effectively.

This kind of outsourcing made it clear that communication could actually take place via an intermediary, and the services associated with this, such as private education and classes in how to deliver this teaching, became a kind of commodity within themselves. This led to much education technology being developed from the 1970s onwards and meant that businesses and school programmes could save a lot of money on travelling expenses. Another byproduct of this was that the education and teaching process was also refined.

This naturally paved the way for online and video learning when the technology caught up, and spawned many educational software initiatives that not only catered to independent learning in subjects like maths and English, but found innovative ways of raising student motivation, chief among which that they could use their own time and computer to learn, which brought a new perspective to the experience.

The technology that has come of this - communication apps like Whatsapp and Zoom; digital and collaborative remote whiteboards; learning management services like Blackboard or Moodle - have further revolutionised the way we learn, all the while retaining the core and familiar components necessary for enhancing learning.

Find out the ways a tutor is really adept at using these resources to benefit the learning outcomes of your child.

We Recommend Everyone Work with an Online Tutor

We are all really digital natives now - we all know our way around the internet. Look at you! You're on this article now.

The personalised element of using our online devices brings comfort, but there is also a sense of adventure that this brings too.

Given that we can assume everyone has the wherewithal to use the internet effectively (unless of course, you are learning about this with your tutor!), there is a large benefit to this since students are being met in their own personal environment, and can access tools quicker than they'd be able to if doing everything physically.

Some other outstanding benefits include:

  • a widened talent pool: if you're drawing from people all across the world, you are bound to find someone who suits your needs more ideally
  • diversity: essentially, there will be a wider range of people who can co-teach you if necessary
  • cost: as we said, there are fewer overheads
  • practicality: there is less time constraint for moving from place to place
  • safety and security: vetting strangers online keeps you more secure than in person
  • learning software: this can be used in-person, but is optimal when done online

This is just the tip of the iceberg! There are plenty of other reasons, so check them all out here.

Potential Downsides of Online Tutoring

Despite the facts we tout as the irrefutable evidence of the benefits of online tutoring, there are obviously some caveats - namely that technology is not infallible.

Wifi and electricity problems are not unheard of, so if you're with a tutor and the line cuts out, there's not much you can do than reschedule. In this vein, connection issues can come into play, and you might miss an instruction that ruins the flow of the whole lesson.

The other issue is more personal. If you are doing it in your own space, there may be more difficulty in keeping focused. In a classroom, someone is there to keep you on task.

Don't let these sway you though because there are really so many more benefits. If you want to manage these online learning difficulties, then read our guide on being able to know how to overcome them.

Clear Advantages of Tuition Online

What's the limitation to the subject range for online learning? It doesn't exist!

Big cities like Sydney and Melbourne might be spoilt for choice with their range of in-person tutoring subjects, but what if you live somewhere more remote?

French, chemistry, yoga, or vegan cooking could all be out of reach - except if you find an online tutor or teacher to give you a class a couple of hours per week!

This goes even further with online university courses such as Open Universities. Geography is no longer a factor, and students are free to engage with their learning at any age.

Another free alternative that teachers at university, in particular, will recommend in addition to a regular class is a Massive Online Open Course which truly anyone can attend (just make sure they're delivered in English!).

Schools like the School of Life offer these, or they are even put on by local governments and are kinds of lecture series given by teachers or professionals in the field. You will definitely find one in your subject area, and may even be able to find a job teaching in one!
