Location matters

Parents in Australia spend hundreds of dollars a week for their children to participate in after school activities.

As a result, private tutors are in demand. Advertising your services online as a tutor is great way to earn extra money. Who doesn't want to work from home? But tutor wages can vary across Australia.

In fact, most private tutor rates vary drastically!

Many factors affecting what a tutor can charge for tuition can, of course, come down to their relevant qualification and years of teaching. However other factors also influence the decision of many to choose one private tutor over another. These can include location.

Looking globally, tutor wages can vary between countries and even suburbs. This is highlighted when looking to the cost of a tutor based in the city versus a tutor based in regional areas. According to our own Superprof data, tutor rates for a private tutor based in Geelong, Victoria can be up to $50 per hour, whereas similar tutoring services located around Melbourne city can cost $80 per hour.

Why is there a difference?

In 2018, the ABS discovered that the average salary in Australia ranges from $71,718 in Tasmania, to$94,224 in Australian Capital Territory.

This is a factor that tutors should consider when trying to make money on the side.

Tutor Wages Depend on Experience

We know how difficult it can be to put a price tag on your work. In order to assist you to set your hourly rates, SuperProf has put together guidelines. Remember that this is just a guide though, and these rates are also affected by variables such as experience, the subject studied, and the pupil's grade in school.

Beginners classes

Beginner classes are all about letting pupils test out a new skill or tutor before settling in. When a student has low levels of knowledge about a subject, they are looking for a teacher who can cover the basics. This means tutors can typically cover more general information off first, resulting in less preparation time before a class. Whilst this is still a great way to make extra income, beginner classes may need to be priced lower than others.

Intermediate classes

Does your student already know the basics of the subject? If they already understand the fundamentals, they may be looking for a teacher that can direct them on where to further improve their skills. Setting a price for an intermediate class sits somewhere in the middle of beginner and advanced hourly rates.

Advanced classes

These are for students who have mastered a subject but are looking to specialise in a certain area. In preparation to teach an advanced class, tutors should spend more time going through specialised texts in order to be able to discuss a particular aspect of a subject in great detail. To factor in this extra time, tutors can charge more.

What affects tutor wages in Australia?

Private tutors must decide their hourly rates ahead of time. However, when determining how much they can reasonably charge they must consider a number of points.

Location and Affluence of an Area

How wealthy a suburb is will definitely affect a tutor's wage. As a general rule, private tutors can charge more to students living in affluent suburbs.

A 2019 SBS survey of 35 parents of Year 5 students found that 23 had used private tutoring for their children. The parents were from both regional and urban areas of Queensland.

Even so, different social groups will be willing to regularly spend more on a home tutor than other groups.

Sydney and Melbourne

More than 50% of parents send their school children to non-government schools in Sydney and Melbourne, compared to 16% of the rest of the country. This aligns with these city's higher costs of living. Therefore tutoring companies within these cities can expect to increase their rates for individualised tutoring.

Location rivalries

It's easy to compare regional and urban settings when trying to determine costs for tutoring programs.

There is a higher concentration of students in the inner city, and fewer students and less competition in regional areas.

How to start earning money as a tutor?

No matter where you live, it's hard to find a tutor that's right for you. Tutors based in the city will need to set competitive rates if they really want to be able to generate extra income. That rate will also be dependent on the area.

Singing up new students may also depend on the area. In the city, parents may be able to shop around when looking for a tutor for their child. However, in areas that are outside of the city, earning extra money as a private tutor may be easier as there is less competition.

If you want to earn extra cash, you need to decide what kind of private tutor you will be.

Are you based near a top university in Australia, such as the University of Melbourne, or UNSW? In these areas, you may run into extra competition. University students are often looking for extra ways to make money. Parents will be looking for tutors like these for their students in the hopes that their children may also attend highly ranked universities.

Similarly, musicians and artists may also be looking to get paid and freelance a skill they're already good at. Artists living in the city may advertise private music lessons or art classes as an extra side hustle. Perhaps freelancing is a goal of theirs and they hope to make enough money from it to live comfortably. Again, there will more competition for these services in the city.

Nearby private schools can influence tutor wages

Local schools can affect how much you earn and get paid.

They may also be looking for their child to get a certain score in their year 12 exams, and in turn, be comfortable with paying a little extra. As a result, as a private tutor, you can earn some extra money from by charging a slightly higher hourly rate.

There are also some high-ranking public schools in the inner cities that require students to sit entrance exams. Parents may also be looking for tutors to ensure their child is given a place.
