About Justin
Teaching guitar, for me, is about nurturing musical independence—helping students move from needing direction to being self-guided, expressive, and confident players. I treat every lesson as a conversation: not just “what to learn,” but why it matters to the student. We begin with foundational skills like ergonomic technique, timing, phrasing, and tone control, but those are integrated into real music—never taught in isolation. I listen closely to what excites each student, whether it’s intricate fingerstyle, crunchy power chords, modal improvisation, or songwriting. From there, I craft a flexible learning path that includes repertoire, creative assignments, theory in context, and performance-readiness. I also help students learn how to learn: how to practice effectively, solve problems on their own, and reflect critically on their growth. One of my proudest moments as a teacher was seeing a student who initially struggled with rhythm go on to record a full EP where they played every instrument—developing not just skill, but musical fluency. I regularly use challenges like “write a piece using only two chords,” or “arrange a melody in three different styles” to keep lessons exploratory and engaging. I want each student to feel like their playing is personal, not just technical. When a student begins to make musical choices that reflect their taste, imagination, and voice—that’s when I know the work is meaningful. My goal is for every student to leave lessons not just with stronger hands, but with clearer ears, sharper instincts, and deeper joy in what they create.

I approach guitar teaching as a partnership that nurtures both your technical abilities and your unique musical expression. We focus on fundamentals—posture, hand positioning, strumming, and chord changes—always rooted in music you love, from folk and blues to rock and pop.
I emphasize practical music theory so you understand how chords work, how rhythm drives groove, and how these elements shape songs. Communication is vital; I explain concepts simply and check in often to tailor lessons to your learning style. I incorporate visual aids, backing tracks, and rhythm tools like loopers to keep learning engaging and effective.
Guitar should be a joyful form of self-expression, not a source of frustration. To inspire, I share stories from professional musicians and everyday learners who have achieved success through persistence. Alongside playing skills, I teach tone control, stage presence, practice strategies, music reading, and improvisation. Whether your goals are casual or professional, I’m committed to helping you grow confidently and creatively.
