About Ed

I am a multi-instrumentalist specializing in Contemporary Music Performance on a wide range of instruments. I started playing the Saxophone at the age of 7, followed by Guitar and Bass as a teenager – achieving a Merit in ABRSM Grade 8 on the Tenor Saxophone before leaving secondary school. I was accepted to the London Centre of Contemporary Music as a mature student in 2011, and have been working as a Musician and Educator throughout London since. My particular interest is in Flow-state and Music Education, and techniques for developing mastery in an easy, fun and intuitive way. I have applied this approach to my own instrumental learning, spending upwards of 30,000 hours over the past decade practicing and now play and teach all the primary instrument groups in the Western Convention. I love working with children and Adults alike, at any skill level and on any instrument. I try to understand my student’s entire perspective and experience of Music, and use my skills and experience to support them in the goal of attaining creative and technical freedom in their instrument and idiom of choice.

The best lessons are always where a student comes with something they are excited about and want to learn. I love working with students to understand music and their relation to it, and focus on methods to help them enjoy the process. Music is not hard, instruments are not hard, they just take time. You don't need to 'be good' before you can have fun, and having fun while playing and listening to your instrument is the most powerful kind of practice you can do. I have all kinds of fun tech, including loopers, visualizers, and even an entire Music Education Themepark built into Minecraft, but my favorite kinds of lessons are the ones where the instrument and the music center stage. Fun tech is great, but Music is good enough that it doesn't need any, and a motivated and excited learner is the only thing we need to groove, y'know?

Details

I have been a full-time performing and teaching Musician for over a decade, forged in the fire of the London Live Music Scene. I absolutely love my work, and have dedicated my life and career towards understanding and creating fulfilling holistic Music learning experiences for others. You can expect a reliable, relaxed and compassionate professional with endless patience. I love helping people, understanding where they are and where they want to get, and taking pleasure in their successes. I don't give a hoot how 'good' you are, my favorite part of being a Music Teacher is helping my students find and develop their authentic voice - with the reward of being able to jam with my students as they progress. I have an industry-leading live performance interface, with a Boss rc600 Looping pedal and pedalboard to allow me to create synth voices out of live instruments, with the use of Octave pedals, distortion, delays, reverb and wah - in real-time on camera in lessons. With high-quality camera and microphones, you will hear studio-quality instrument fidelity in our lessons, and I have lots of fun tech and toys to make lessons varied and enjoyable. I often go over in lessons if we are having fun, and part of the reason my fees are a bit higher than normal is that I do not book lessons back to back, instead I try to keep a 30-minute gap in between. I do not like having to rush, and I like being able to accommodate students if there are any delays, as well as go over if we feel like it. My lessons are unlike any you will find from "let's try that again shall we" Teachers who just sit you in front of written Music and watch the clock, waiting for the lesson to end. I love my work, it is sacred to me, and I always treat my students with compassion, kindness and respect.
