About Laura

My philosophy of flute teaching combines a strong technical foundation with a deep commitment to individual creativity. Every student brings a unique voice and learning style, and I tailor each lesson to support both their musical development and personal confidence. We start with the fundamentals—posture, tone, breath management, and hand position—and build from there into more nuanced skills like articulation, phrasing, and musical expression. I introduce theory, aural training, and rhythm work through the lens of the pieces we study, ensuring that students understand the “why” behind what they’re playing. I believe in the value of both tradition and innovation: classical works provide historical context and technical challenge, while modern and student-selected pieces create excitement and ownership. I also encourage improvisation, even at a basic level, as a tool to free students from the fear of mistakes and foster musical risk-taking. One of the highlights of my teaching career was guiding a young flutist through her first experience composing her own piece. Seeing her proudly perform it for friends and family was a testament to what can happen when students feel empowered creatively. I aim to create a supportive environment where students not only develop their playing but also connect emotionally with the music and grow as thoughtful, self-reflective artists.

To me, flute teaching is a form of partnership. It’s about meeting each student where they are and helping them grow into their fullest musical self through a balance of discipline, joy, and discovery.

My lessons begin with a strong technical foundation: breath awareness, tone shaping, embouchure development, posture alignment, articulation practice, and rhythmic control. These skills are introduced through carefully chosen exercises and beginner pieces designed to build consistency and confidence.

As students advance, we work through methodical scale routines, progressive etudes, and repertoire that challenges both fingers and phrasing. Whether it’s a French romantic solo or a transcription of a video game theme, the music we study is chosen with the student's voice and interests in mind. I always include supplemental skills like sight-reading, interval recognition, ear training, and guided listening to build complete musicianship.

A major part of my teaching is fostering creativity: I guide students through improvisation based on mood or mode, have them write short melodic phrases, and encourage ensemble play when possible. One of my favorite teaching moments was helping a student record a flute and vocal duet they had written for a school project—it not only improved their musicianship, but affirmed their identity as a creator.

I integrate digital tools like metronome apps, slow-down practice software, digital annotation, and self-recordings to give students feedback and self-awareness between lessons. My mission is to help students develop not just flute skills, but a deeper relationship with music itself. I want them to become expressive, inquisitive, and confident musicians who see their instrument as both a discipline and a joy.
