About Elijah
Every student learns differently, and my teaching philosophy is built on the belief that musical growth comes from meeting people exactly where they are. I design every lesson around the individual—what excites them, what frustrates them, what they’re curious about. We build core guitar skills—clean playing, fluid movement, chord vocabulary, and time awareness—but we do it through music the student cares about. I work across styles and levels, from acoustic singer-songwriter to jazz, metal, indie, and experimental ambient music. We explore technique, but also phrasing, dynamics, tone shaping, and song form. I bring theory in as a tool for creative choice: how to reharmonize a section, why a melody pulls the way it does, or how to modulate with intention. Students also take on creative challenges like writing a piece based on a single riff or transforming a solo into a vocal-style melody. I use audio and video feedback to help track progress and build listening skills. A high point in my teaching was helping a student arrange a solo guitar version of a synth-heavy EDM track—they captured the energy using harmonics, altered tunings, and layered dynamics. I want students to feel both supported and stretched, with lessons that build confidence and invite experimentation. More than anything, I believe in teaching music as a process of discovery—one that’s joyful, challenging, and deeply personal.

When you study guitar with me, you’re not just learning how to play chords and riffs—you’re developing a lifelong connection to music. From our first session, we work together to identify the genres, artists, and musical goals that excite you most. Using those as a guide, we begin building a foundation of guitar skills: clean fretting, rhythm control, accurate strumming or picking, and musical listening.
Every technical concept is taught in context—if you’re learning a new chord shape, we’ll immediately apply it in a song. If we’re working on timing, you’ll be doing so through rhythm games, loops, or real-world examples. I keep theory grounded in practice: explaining how a major scale works by hearing it in the chorus of your favorite song or connecting a fingerstyle pattern to a tune you already know. I stay attuned to how you learn best and adapt each lesson—some students thrive with notation or tab, others with visuals or guided jam sessions. Open communication is essential, and I always encourage questions, feedback, and dialogue about what’s working and what isn’t. Guitar should never feel like a one-size-fits-all process.
I also include skills that go beyond the instrument itself—practice habits, performance preparation, emotional connection to repertoire, and even light songwriting or composition. Along the way, I share stories from a wide range of players so you can see how universal and personal this journey really is. Whether you're exploring guitar for the first time or refining your artistry, I’m here to help you move forward in a way that’s steady, supportive, and most of all, meaningful to you.
