About Harold
Teaching saxophone has allowed me to guide students on a deeply fulfilling journey toward technical excellence, musical sensitivity, and creative empowerment. I begin with a foundation of healthy playing mechanics—focusing on diaphragmatic breathing, balanced embouchure, comfortable posture, precise hand position, smooth articulation, and tonal consistency—to ensure students develop sustainable technique and avoid strain. Simultaneously, I cultivate musical expressivity from day one, encouraging students to shape phrases with dynamic nuance, tasteful vibrato, and expressive diction. Music theory is introduced as a living tool, always linked to repertoire or improvisation, helping students hear the function of scales, chords, and progressions in their own playing. Improvisation plays a central role and is scaffolded gradually: from simple call-and-response and scalar motifs to more complex modal and harmonic explorations—all crafted to build confidence and cultivate each student's musical imagination. Repertoire is student-driven and spans genres—be it jazz standards, blues, classical études, or contemporary pieces—ensuring lessons stay motivating and authentic. Clear goal-setting keeps the teaching focused, whether preparing for recitals, auditions, ensemble performances, or independent projects. One of the most rewarding turning points was watching a student shift from hesitance to joyfully performing a 12-bar blues solo, transformed by self-confidence and musical ownership. My mission is to create a nourishing and empowering environment where every student becomes a skilled saxophonist who values discipline, loves room for creative play, and develops a lifelong, heartfelt relationship with music.

In my saxophone studio, I strive to create a space where students feel empowered to take ownership of their musical journey. I believe that learning an instrument is not just about acquiring technical skills but also about developing a deeper understanding of oneself and the world around us. I begin each lesson by assessing the student's current level and setting clear, achievable goals.
This collaborative approach ensures that the student feels invested in their learning process and understands the purpose behind each exercise and piece of music. Technique is a priority in my teaching, but I also emphasize the importance of musicality. I encourage students to think beyond the notes on the page, to interpret the music with their own voice, and to connect emotionally with the repertoire.
I incorporate a variety of musical styles into lessons, from classical etudes to contemporary pop songs, to expose students to different musical traditions and to keep lessons engaging. For students interested in improvisation, I provide a structured approach that includes ear training, scale practice, and improvisation exercises. I believe that improvisation is a powerful tool for developing creativity and musical expression. Technology is a valuable asset in my teaching.
I use recording devices to allow students to listen back to their performances, helping them identify areas for improvement and track their progress over time. I also utilize digital resources such as sheet music apps and metronomes to enhance practice sessions. Beyond technical instruction, I aim to cultivate a positive and supportive learning environment. I celebrate each student's achievements, no matter how small, and encourage them to embrace challenges as opportunities for growth. My ultimate goal is to help students become not only proficient saxophonists but also confident, expressive musicians who find joy in their musical journey.
