English

I believe that people generally learn a foreign language to communicate. However, each student is an individual and has their own very specific reason for learning. These reasons must be taken into account always. My classes are fun, interesting, unconventional and lead to success in whatever you set out to achieve by learning.

  • 1) Do you speak this language fluently because of your origins or because a teacher inspired you to learn?

I was born and raised in London so English this is my native tongue. However, I first started teaching it back in 2002, when I moved to Uruguay and started teaching ESL in a bilingual private school there called Colegio Ingles. This is where I learnt to speak my second language, Spanish.
  • 2) Can you name a living, historical or fictional character that you think is the emblematic representative of the language's culture?

Apart from our Queen who speaks what we call the Queen's English and is truly emblematic, nonetheless, it is a rather unnatural way for most English people to speak and it would be wrong of me to choose just one character who could represent English, as it is spoken with many an accent in England and globally.
  • 3) Is there a typical word, phrase, tradition or behaviour in the language that you particularly like?

One word or phrase, in English that I particularly like, no, there are just so many. I do however, love learning new vocabulary and also teaching them to be reproduced, this in turn becomes a hidden power. so I have chosen this quote to back up what I feel about vocabulary:- "The more words you know, the more clearly and powerfully you will think ... and the more ideas you will invite into your mind." - Wilfred Funk
  • 4) Why does speaking this language matter to you?

Speaking languages in general matter to me, as this world becomes smaller for us and the chances to connect with businesses worldwide and travel have become more facilitated, English is becoming the Lingua Franca in this evolving world. So, it would be great if we could all communicate and understand one and other's similarities and differences and understand why, as this will put an end to xenophobia and will promote understanding and acceptance of each other's cultures.
  • 5) What is the main difficulty in learning this language and what can help the process of learning?

The main difficulty to learning English is the exceptions to the rules and there are so many of them. We have a multitude of phrases, a myriad of phrasal verbs and don't even get me started on the dreaded "P" word, prepositions. Spelling is also particularly challenging too. I think to be given the opportunity to explore what you truly need to learn and have each class tailor-made to suit your needs will aid in the learning process, and to work with natural production of the language.
  • 6) Provide a valuable anecdote related to your language learning or your days at school.

In high school I became aware that when I read aloud, I would put words in that weren't there, and miss whole lines and sentences. This was a truly embarrassing time for me as I excelled in all subjects, including English but just couldn't read out loud. I became rebellious in my English classes to avoid being chosen to read aloud, and felt that my teachers didn't deserve that rebellion. But life always teaches you lessons and some 22 years after my school days, I became a teacher, not only working with rebellious students like myself at their age, but also had to read out loud to the class. This took a lot of breathing exercises and slowing down of my brain so I kept in line with what I was reading. Little did I know that my condition was none other than one form of dyslexia, of which not a lot was known in my days, and now of course it is. So at the age of 36 I was able to overcome my dyslexia, what is more I can recognise it in others, which in turn has given me the ability to help and encourage students specific needs with reading.
  • 7) How has travel or a specific trip helped you to increase your skill and knowledge of the language?

Moving to Uruguay first threw me in the path of teaching languages as a second language. It was here that I trained for this role, qualified, put into practise, made lots of mistakes and learnt from them. I learnt about Spanish Language interference and noted the common mistakes people made. Although I must say that it was on moving back to my homeland and requalifying and studying for other types of teaching that I was really able to see patterns in cultures and other languages that had profound effects on their spoken and written English. I have since learned to teach a variety of English Language skills, such as GCSE, Writing skills, ESL, Literacy for teens and adults, personal statements for university, curriculum writing, TOEFL, Cambridge assessment exams, and the most popular of all my subjects taught, IELTS. This is being globally to amazing people and yes, they learn from me and I learn a lot from them too.
  • 8) What makes you a Superprof in language?

It would be hard for me to say I am a SUPERPROF because it doesn't reflect the humble and modest person that I truly am. I would say that I have 21 years of experience, I tailor all classes to suit the student, I am empathetic, patient and kind and my results in exams speak louder than words, and so do the testimonies, reviews and recommendations I have with Superprof website.
