About Chris

I have a PhD and have worked in the university sector since the 1990s, including as Reader in Theology and Religious Studies, Head of the Department of Religious Studies and Director of Student Support for the School of European Culture and Languages at the University of Kent. I have published 6 monographs on topics including religion, film, death, Christmas and nostalgia, and have also edited books and written dozens of articles and nearly two thousand film reviews. I am also a journalist on a TV series funded by the British Film Institute, and a TV and radio presenter and podcast host. I coordinated post- and undergraduate programmes for 20 years at the University of Kent, supervised 12 MPhil/PhD students and was an external examiner for PhD students in other institutions in the UK or overseas. At all levels, I am most proud of the way I have monitored students' progress against educational targets and implemented positive interventions, using exceptional communication techniques to enhance engagement. I have extensive experience in designing exams, assessments and course content and in engaging, motivating and inspiring students to develop their thirst for knowledge. Working as a consultant, presenter and journalist on a children's educational TV series aimed at 11-15 year olds has expanded my ability to enable students of all ages to arrive at and maintain their potential and thrive in their educational journeys. Many of the students I have taught at undergraduate level have gone on to do postgraduate work with me, and some are now published authors. Testimonials from former students 'Chris put together a fantastic module that was extremely organised, structured and interactive. It is because of this that I saw a growth in my confidence because he made the teaching environment relaxed and enjoyable.' 'Although Chris was there to teach and to guide seminar discussions, he was also hugely encouraging with our own ideas...' 'Above all, I give credit for Chris for ensuring that his students are all settled and happy throughout the course.' 'If I ever sent an email, I could guarantee an instant response that was always detailed in order to help with whatever concern that I had. He is also very flexible as if I was unable to make an office hour, he always ensured an alternative so that I did not miss out.' 'Chris is an engaging lecturer and seminar leader. He never fails to make the weekly topic interesting and thought provoking.' 'Being a religious studies professor, he is always sure to make all points of view heard, and never pushes anyone to reveal their own personal beliefs. However, he makes people feel so comfortable and welcome in his classes that students freely share their stance, when they otherwise would not have done.' 'Chris makes sure to be available as much as possible outside of class hours for anyone who needs his guidance, and is always up for a chat after seminars for those with extra questions.' 'Chris is clearly passionate about what he does... But, more importantly, he shows an outstanding ability to make every single class member feel included, always asking questions rather than talking at us. This encourages even the shyest members of the class to provide an insight into the discussion, and ensures every voice is heard.'

Based on 25 years of experience in higher education, working with thousands of students, I develop bespoke ways of tutoring students at all levels, giving efficient and substantial feedback on everything from personal statements, essays and dissertations from GCSE and A level through to BA, MA and doctoral students. My tutoring is one-to-one and is tailored towards the individual needs of students. I have a proven track record of helping students who have not achieved the highest GCSE or A level grades to thrive at university and to graduate with top, often first class, degrees. I have very positive experiences of working with SEN and shy students. My lessons are typically one or two hours and I provide detailed feedback. Each lesson entails working through sample writing and fine-tuning and finessing the work, with close attention paid to grammar, spelling, sentence construction, and the style and quality of the arguments being developed. I will adopt varied teaching strategies, catering to the educational needs of young adults and mature students. Drawing on my experience of developing and improving courses to better serve students' needs and meet standards, I draw on current research, new techniques and latest findings to improve relevancy. I use exceptional communication techniques to enhance engagement. I know from experience that not everyone reaches their optimum level at the same speed, and I adapt my teaching to the needs of each individual tutee, and will never give up on a student! For 8 years I led the Student Support provision in my University School and I will help each student overcome whatever may be holding them back to become the very best that they can be.
