An architect holds a special place in our society as someone who will design the building, home and interior that we spend our whole lives in. It's an important role that brings with it the ability to have an impact on a large number of people, and the best architects understand that they don't simply design a space, but design a life.
This is why gaining admission to study in the school of architecture is not always the easiest task, why the requirements of architecture degree courses can be stressful and why a minimum duration of 5 years of study (both Bachelor and Master's degrees) is needed to register for any architecture board.
There are three main courses that an aspiring future architect might apply for if they're based in Adelaide:
Each of these Architecture bachelor programs has a similar selection process. For those who are applying directly from high school, admission requirements for studies are based on your SACE certificate and ATAR rank. Of the three, the lowest ATAR rank that can offer a selection for entry is 66.00 ATAR (for the Bachelor of Interior Architecture course). The average ATAR rank needed for admission to these Bachelor programs is around 75.00.
Entry requirements are a little different for international students looking to study an Architecture course at an Australian university. For admission to an Architecture course, international students must have completed a high school certificate, as well as be able to prove their English language abilities. To do this, you will need to complete an English exam such as IELTS, with the lowest selection score being around a 6.5
Domestic and international study fees can vary quite a lot. Here are the average fees for a year in each course:
If these study fees per year scare you a little, just remember that there are plenty of help options to apply for, from HECS to scholarships.
All three of these programs are only available for on-campus delivery, so if you live far away from campus, you may consider moving. If you're looking for a diploma that offers online delivery modes, you can find them at most unis across Australia.
So what will you actually learn? Well, architecture is a field that requires not only an understanding of design and design theory but also a concrete understanding of the building processes, and the environment around us. There's not much point in spending time designing a beautiful building if it doesn't fit into its surroundings or is impossible to build.
With a view to becoming a well-rounded architect, these degrees teach how to apply practical as well as design theory skills, from 2D and 3D modelling skills to understanding materials and how these can be used in exterior and interior design. These studies also offer opportunities for project-based learning including formulating proposals, the different stages of project work and more.
Not quite yet! While these degrees will allow students to build up their skills and hopefully find their key interests, they aren't enough to start building skyscrapers. The next step to your future career is completing a Master's program. Both UniSa and UoA offer a range of programs, from Landscape Architecture to Planning and Urban Design.
These courses often also include internship or industry experience courses which students need to complete in order to gain enough credit points to graduate.
At some point during their full-time or part-time Architecture studies, it's normal for even the best student to find that they need a little bit of extra help. This is where a Superprof tutor comes in! No matter what your lowest or highest marks are, our tutors have the knowledge and experience to enhance your study experience.
Most tutors offer study help online or even on-campus and are available to help all students, from those studying Year 12 at high school, wanting to get a good ATAR, to those finishing the final year of their Master's degree.
