About Maisy

Flute instruction, to me, is a process of cultivating both control and imagination. I guide each student through a structured but flexible curriculum that begins with tone development and posture and builds steadily toward expressive interpretation. My early lessons are grounded in developing a steady airstream, a flexible embouchure, and correct hand positioning—all essential for tone and technical fluency. I introduce articulation and finger technique through a blend of classical methods and playful exercises, always adapting based on a student’s age, goals, and learning style. We explore music from a variety of genres and cultures, which helps students grow musically and stay engaged. Alongside this, I introduce theory through a hands-on approach—analyzing the music they’re already playing and building sight-reading and aural skills incrementally. Improvisation is a key part of my lessons; I believe when students can create their own melodies, they understand phrasing, form, and emotion more deeply. I structure each student’s practice through goal-oriented plans and offer regular performance opportunities to foster confidence and musical maturity. One especially meaningful teaching experience involved helping a shy, beginner flutist prepare for her first solo; we focused on deep breathing, storytelling through music, and mindset coaching, and she ultimately performed with calm confidence. I also use technology—recordings, tempo apps, video feedback—to enhance learning and provide additional support between lessons. My goal is not only to teach flute skills but to develop independent musicians who understand their art, trust their ears, and express themselves with confidence and creativity.

My teaching philosophy is grounded in the belief that learning to play the flute should be both artistically fulfilling and personally empowering. I approach each lesson as a dialogue, not a lecture—a space where students are encouraged to explore their own musical ideas while receiving structured guidance that ensures growth. Whether working with a young beginner or an advanced pre-professional, I focus on building a strong technical foundation while fostering creativity, self-reflection, and musical identity.

I start every student’s journey with the fundamentals of tone production and breath support. The flute is an extension of the breath, and tone is our most expressive tool. We explore long tones, vowel shaping, harmonics, and body alignment to help students discover their most resonant sound. I also prioritize finger technique, articulation clarity, and hand position early on, using methodical exercises and scale work that increase in complexity as students progress. But my teaching goes beyond just technique. I place significant importance on phrasing, storytelling, and emotion in music-making.

I encourage students to approach pieces as narratives. We experiment with different tempos, dynamic shapes, and articulations to uncover the expressive possibilities in a phrase. I often model musical choices but invite students to try alternatives and explain their decisions. This not only builds interpretation skills but also promotes confidence and independence. Repertoire is always selected with the student’s goals and personality in mind. I maintain a progressive curriculum that incorporates études, solos, and chamber works, but I also leave room for exploration—whether that’s a student’s favorite pop song, a traditional melody from their culture, or a new piece by a living composer.

I believe that engaging with diverse musical material helps students stay connected and motivated. Music theory and ear training are woven into our work. I use activities like melodic echoing, scale construction, rhythmic dictation, and chord analysis to reinforce literacy and develop the ear. Improvisation is introduced gradually and creatively—as a call-and-response game, or a variation on a familiar melody—so that students become comfortable making spontaneous musical choices. When students are preparing for performances or competitions, I work closely with them to develop a healthy, focused mindset.

We discuss practice strategies, visualization techniques, and how to manage stage fright. One of my students once turned their nervous energy into a beautifully expressive performance simply by learning to reframe adrenaline as excitement. Watching that shift was incredibly rewarding. Outside of lessons, I support student learning with digital tools—practice videos, app recommendations, and goal-tracking sheets that encourage reflection and self-guided growth.

I also encourage listening as part of weekly assignments, introducing students to great performers, different styles, and historically significant works. At the core of everything I teach is the belief that music is both a discipline and a joy. I want my students to develop their technical skills, but also their imagination, their resilience, and their ability to connect with others through sound. No matter their path, I hope they leave my studio with not only a strong foundation, but a deep, lasting love for making music.
