About Claire
My favourite part of teaching? Well, it's got to be the 'A-ha!' moment, when a student understands something they've struggled with for so long. Not only that, but I delight in seeing students grow in their knowledge and confidence.
I consider myself to be very lucky, as my native tongue has given me the opportunity to live and work anywhere in the world. Straight after I graduated with my English literature degree, I trained in TEFL and it changed my life. I became more and more passionate about the English language - as much as I loved literature. With TEFL, it took me to Greece, Italy, Spain, the US and other parts of the UK.
After completing my PGCE in secondary English and media studies, it widened my knowledge further and I have since taught both subjects up to A Level. My experience includes being Head of Media Studies, literacy coordinator, examiner for WJEC GCSE English, invigilator for various EFL examinations and a marker for 500 Words.
Over the years, I have continued to study and train in order to maintain an up-to-date knowledge of my subjects. I have recent training in Safeguarding, Prevent, and GDPR as well as an Enhanced DBS for children and adults which is checked yearly on the Government update service.
I have been passionate about teaching for the past 26 years. I made the decision to embark on a journey of sharing my love for English and media studies. As a teacher, I am dedicated to exploring the various aspects of these subjects and instilling that same passion within my students. Witnessing the growth and development of my students' knowledge and skills brings me immense joy and fulfilment. Teaching has become more than just a profession for me; it is a way of making a positive impact on the lives of others. I strive to create a dynamic and engaging learning environment, where students are encouraged to think critically and express their ideas confidently.

In my lessons, I prioritise interactivity and student engagement, employing tools such as Google Classroom and Google Meet. My sessions are designed to be collaborative, with students actively participating through discussions, quizzes, games, and tasks. I also incorporate short video clips to enrich the learning experience and maintain student interest.
Sessions all follow a similar structure. This would include: finding out what students already know, introducing new information, practising new techniques or language, testing the new information or techniques and reinforcement. However, some lessons might need adjusting to suit the student or the circumstance, as I think that it is better to tackle any misunderstandings, or iron out any difficulties as they arise.
I believe in getting students to think critically about their work and what they read, so discussions are important to check understanding and to feed the student's curiosity. Everyone learns differently, so when teaching I aim to adapt the lesson to the student. For me, tutoring is different to teaching in a class, as I am filling in the spaces of missing knowledge and feeding a passion for the subject.

Details
The first lesson will be for 45 minutes, as it will be a way of getting to know you. In that time, we can look at your reasons for wanting tutoring, what you have previously studied, your level and your aim after you have completed your sessions.
During lessons you will not need to buy anything, but it would be handy to have an exercise book, a pen and pencils and - depending on the type of lessons you want - a set of colouring pencils. You won't need anything else, except a good internet connection and a decent-sized screen.
