About Hugh

I have worked within Admissions at Oxford for two years, coaching students for applications to the university both before and after I graduated. I prepare humanities students for all aspects of the admissions process from subject exams, to personal statements and interviews. By working with a student from the beginning of the application, I am able to help them explore areas of academic interest and further reading so as to create a powerful personal statement and a deep understanding of topics that they can draw on in interviews. I have tutored 7 students toward Oxford and Cambridge applications and all have succeeded to interview.

About the lesson

I approach Oxbridge applications holistically, working from the beginning to help the students develop a rounded academic persona that will help them to succeed at all junctures of the process. I begin by helping the student develop their interests in a subject beyond their school curriculum, proposing further readings and suggesting essay prizes they could enter to further develop their understanding and bolster their application. I then coach them through the creation and writing of personal statements, focusing particularly on how this will become a valuable resource to tailor the interview experience. Nearer the time of application, end of August-Early September, I begin prep for particular subject tests (HAT or TSA) and for the interview process. The structure of individual lessons is left flexible at the outset to see what techniques the student best responds to but I stay close to the overall timetable to ensure the process is as comprehensive and enjoyable as possible.
