I have devoted my life to music, and I'm happy to share my knowledge with you! We can discuss the specifics of your goals in our trial lesson but here's a broad overview of my pedagogical approach: The foremost task for any student of mine is the training of the ears. I encourage my students to get into the habit of listening to a variety of performances. From here, the student will discover their own particular taste in style; this is an essential part of becoming an individual music-maker. I also guide a student to develop their internal metronome/rhythm/feel. This can be improved occasionally with the help of a metronome, however I encourage counting out-loud when practising instead, because one doesn't wish to become reliant on the metronome. Notation comes next - learning to read classical music notation is a critical skill for pianists. Playing notes off a stave should eventually be as natural as reading the words off a page. This fluency is achieved by regularly sight reading in ways that I demonstrate and is only possible when one has a good ear and a sturdy internal rhythm. From this base, I go on to help the student develop the mechanics of their technique - to achieve complete control over their fingers and total confidence in the physical landscape of the piano. The mechanics include finger independence, dexterity and the ability to control the quality and depth of any given tone/note. This ability unlocks the door to a world of possibilities - control over your sound means control over what the music means. We aren't just playing notes - we're telling a story. Always. Technique at its core is the ability to control distribution of weight. However, musicality is a technique in its own right. These are just a few aspects of piano playing/music-making that I cover with my students. There's also memorisation, repertoire, improvisation, analytical theory, motivation, mindset... Finally, I'm more than happy to help students wishing to do their grade examinations (ABRSM or Trinity). Setting goals is a wonderful way to improve!

  • 1) When did you first develop a passion for music and your favourite instrument?

I developed a passion for music, particularly the piano, at the age of 5. Playing the piano has been a source of joy and inspiration for me ever since.
  • 2) Is there a particular type of music or artist that you listen to on a loop without it driving you crazy?

Absolutely, as a pianist who loves Ravel and classical repertoire, I can listen to those compositions on a loop without it driving me crazy. The intricate nuances and timeless beauty of classical music, especially Ravel's work, provide a captivating and enriching experience with each repetition.
  • 3) Explain to us the most difficult or riveting course you could personally give to a student of music.

The most challenging and captivating course I could offer would be an in-depth exploration of advanced interpretation and expression in the works of a specific composer, such as Chopin or Rachmaninoff. This course would delve into nuanced techniques, historical context, and personal expression, aiming to elevate the student's interpretative skills to an exceptional level.
  • 4) What do you think is the most complicated instrument to master and why?

Determining the most complicated instrument to master is subjective, however I would definitely say the piano! Its complexity lies in managing multiple voices, intricate finger movements, and a wide tonal range. The pianist must simultaneously control dynamics, phrasing, and expression, demanding a high level of coordination and skill.
  • 5) What are your keys to success?

    Practice, practice, practice.
  • 6) Name three musicians you dream of meeting in your favourite bar in the early hours of the morning. Explain why.

Yuja Wang - I like her energy
Glen Gould - to fact check everyone
Sergei Rachmaninoff - so i can get a selfie
  • 7) Provide a valuable anecdote related to music or your days at music school.

I decided to enter a school competition before I really knew the pieces required for it - this gave me a lot of motivation / pressure to learn quickly and it payed off!
  • 8) What are the little touches that make you a Superprof in music?

I have a commitment to fostering a supportive and encouraging learning environment. I strive to inspire a genuine love for music while ensuring students develop a solid foundation in piano skills.
