About James
I was founding Director of Jazz with East London Community Band, teacher of Brass at Hockerill Anglo-European College, teacher of Jazz and Musicianship at Saffron Centre for Young Musicians and am currently Lower Brass Tutor with Orchestras For All. I have worked as a tutor or consultant with schools and organisations including Bedford School for Girls, National Youth Orchestra and National Children's Orchestra. As a performer I have performed at many of the UK's top venues including the Royal Albert Hall, Barbican Centre, Sage Gateshead and Glasgow Royal Concert Hall, and with Jazz, Pop, Folk and Classical artists and ensembles including Laura Mvula, Celtic Connections, the Scottish National Jazz Orchestra, Charlotte Church and the Choir of King's College Cambridge. Prior to 2020 I lived in and around London, where I had a busy portfolio of teaching positions and performing work. I am now resident in Glasgow and am an active member of the Scottish Jazz scene, performing regularly with many of Scotland's top Jazz musicians such as Paul Towndrow, Mario Caribé and Stu Brown. I also work UK-wide, particularly through my work with Orchestras for All, a national youth music organisation dedicated to providing inclusive music-making opportunities. I was formerly a Pastoral Tutor and now am Lower Brass Tutor, working UK-wide. I am also an active and award-winning composer and arranger, with credits including the Royal Opera House, Wigmore Hall, Sage Gateshead, S4C, Gabrieli Consort and Wilderness Orchestra.

I have been teaching individuals, groups and ensembles since 2008. I studied music at the Junior Royal Academy of Music, Cambridge University and Guildhall School of Music and Drama, and hold both an MA in Music and an MMus in Jazz Performance. I also hold a PGCert in Performance Teaching, with Distinction. I have taught students of all ages from 7 years upwards. I strongly believe in lifelong learning and particularly welcome adults either returning to instrumental lessons or taking up an instrument for the first time. I am particularly experienced in working with advanced students including those preparing for university or music college auditions, and adult amateurs looking to challenge themselves in a supportive environment. I take a holistic, person-centred approach to teaching, focused on developing all-round musicianship and a sense of personal confidence. I encourage all my students to take part in ensembles and will help them to find opportunities to play with others wherever possible. The core of my musical life is in Jazz and I particularly enjoy teaching improvisation, but I am also experienced in Classical and Pop music. I work cooperatively with students to set goals which may include specific repertoire, exams, music theory, music technology, technical work, performances and/or composition, according to the aims and needs of the student. For younger students this may also include parents. I frequently create bespoke resources for students. Lessons typically last between 30 and 60 minutes, depending on the needs of the student. Occasionally more advanced students may benefit from less frequent, longer lessons. Lessons can take place either online or from one of two locations in Glasgow (South or West).

James is an excellent tutor. He directed a community band I was part of and our improvement individually and as a whole band was tangible to the point that we achieved a two Gold awards at a national competition. He is patient, clear, organised and reliable. He is a highly knowledgeable and skilled jazz musician and is able to pass this along in an encouraging and inspiring style. He is also a very nice guy!
