About David

I am a visual artist whose practice bridges painting, animation, and storytelling. With a foundation in traditional media, I specialize in watercolor and acrylic painting, using these mediums combined with digital illustration techniques and software like Procreate and Photoshop. I’ve worked as a resident artist for Winsor & Newton and Liquitex in VIC and Tasmania in Australia, where I developed community-based projects and workshops that encouraged artistic exploration. As a 2D hand-drawn animator, I contributed to the short film In August, bringing movement and emotion to life through frame-by-frame illustration. In addition to my visual work, I am the author and co-author of the books SoulIbird and Only Images SB, both of which blend visual narratives with reflective, symbolic content. These publications reflect my ongoing interest in the intersections of image, word, and the human experience. My artistic journey is deeply informed by my Colombian heritage and my experiences living and working abroad, particularly in multicultural communities. Through my work, I seek to create bridges between cultures, using art as a tool for dialogue, empathy, and shared understanding.

About the lesson

Illustration classes will immerse students in the world of hyper-realistic illustration, using the timeless grisaille technique as its foundation. Grisaille, a monochromatic approach that relies on shades of gray, is a powerful method for achieving depth, texture, and realism in artwork. By focusing on tonal values, precise shading, and layered color application, students will learn how to create stunning, lifelike illustrations that captivate viewers. Through step-by-step exercises and hands-on practice, participants will: - Build detailed grisaille under-paintings using black ivory gouache or India ink, mastering the interplay of light and shadow. - Layer transparent color washes over the monochromatic base to enhance realism and add subtle chromatic depth. By the end of the program, students will have a deeper understanding of how to use this technique to create illustrations that are both technically impressive and visually striking.
