About Alisha

Teaching saxophone is about guiding students through a journey of technical mastery and self-expression. I focus first on essential fundamentals—breath control, embouchure, finger agility, posture, articulation, tone, and intonation—knowing these provide the groundwork for every great performance. I integrate improvisation early, encouraging students to explore musical ideas through scales, modes, ear training, and harmonic understanding, which nurtures creativity and confidence. Music theory is woven into lessons in an applied manner, helping students see the structure behind the music they play or create. Repertoire selection is personalized, spanning jazz, blues, pop, and classical genres, to keep lessons engaging and relevant. I collaborate with students to set meaningful goals and develop consistent practice routines that promote growth and sustain motivation. Technology, including recording tools, tuners, and digital play-alongs, enhances learning by enabling students to evaluate their progress and deepen their musical insights. One of the most rewarding experiences has been watching a student transform from a nervous beginner into a confident soloist who shines in performance. Ultimately, I aim to foster saxophonists who are not only technically skilled but also passionate, expressive musicians with a lifelong love for their instrument.

My approach to teaching saxophone is deeply rooted in the understanding that every student comes with a unique background, goals, and way of engaging with music. I begin by establishing a strong technical foundation, focusing on posture, breath control, embouchure, finger technique, articulation, tone production, and rhythmic accuracy to ensure healthy, efficient playing habits that will serve students long term.

I firmly believe that technique should always serve musicality, so alongside fundamentals, I foster creativity and emotional expression. I encourage students to explore improvisation, phrasing, dynamics, and stylistic nuances within genres ranging from jazz and classical to blues and contemporary pop. My lessons are highly adaptable, integrating music theory and ear training in a practical, applied way that supports improvisation and sight-reading skills.

I incorporate modern technology, including recording software, metronomes, tuners, and backing tracks, to enhance learning and provide immediate, constructive feedback. Performance preparation is an essential component of my teaching philosophy; I work closely with students on building confidence, stage presence, and managing performance anxiety so they can share their music authentically in recitals, competitions, and ensembles.

One particularly memorable experience was guiding a beginner who initially struggled with breath support and tone but, through patient practice and encouragement, evolved into a confident soloist who won a local jazz festival. Above all, my goal is to help each student find their personal voice on the saxophone, blending technical skill with artistic freedom to inspire lifelong musical passion.
