Let's go

Babbel

Babbel, founded in January 2008, was the world’s first language-learning app.

Available in 14 different languages (of course available in the ever-important English).

You can use Babbel on the web as well as on Android and iOS. Why not go with the original and one of the best.

You could start taking English classes Melbourne here.

No matter if you’re an English intermediate, novice, or full-on beginner, Babbel will have a program that caters to you.

Babbel offers:

  • Vocabulary lessons on a myriad of topics, from health to daily life.
  • Lessons on riddles, sayings, slang and all the different idioms you need to know.
  • A chance to review each lesson.

Each lesson will go for around 12-15 minutes. The lesson is organised well.

The lesson topic is defined from the start, for example, “How to ask for directions”, and you can then answer questions based on the given topic.

The app is interactive and there are many subjects to choose from for the student.

Whether you prefer to learn by writing, listening, reading or speaking, Babbel can design a lesson for you.

Babbel aims to tailor each class to the person taking the class and to reflect real-life events and topics that will be relevant to your future conversations. You will impress people no doubt on your trip to an English-speaking country, or any English speakers you meet at home for that matter.

Like everything, Babbel has its upsides and drawbacks.

The website and phone application are beautifully designed, and the platform is easy to navigate your way around, no matter if you’re young or old.

The lessons are so fun and interactive, you will hardly feel it’s a chore to learn English.

There is a slight downside, being that Babbel users must pay a small subscription fee of around $13 per month.

In our opinion, $13 is still a good price for a smooth, immersive experience that is guaranteed by Babbel.

Duolingo

Duolingo is an online platform where learners can engage with a number of languages.

In fact, 23 languages are available in a whopping 68 courses on the program, which was launched in 2011. Amongst those languages of course you will find the ever-handy English language.

Like other popular language learning programs, Duolingo is available to download on iOS and Android.

Duolingo does however put a different spin on things, compared to other popular apps such as Babbel and Rosetta Stone.

What it enables you to do is to learn English by translating short texts from English to your native language, and vice versa. Learning vocabulary and phrases in this way is a great way to commit the language to memory. Learn which translation tools are good for learning English here.

It also has dictation exercises, which get you to type the text as you hear it. Doing this will definitely improve your English comprehension, in both spoken and written forms. If listening is the way you learn best, Check out these podcasts for learning English.

The exercises on Duolingo don’t take long, it’s easy to do a few just before bed, or on your morning commute to school or work. There is no pressure and no required costs. Even if you just put in 10 minutes per week, Duolingo over time will definitely improve your English language ability.

Duolingo has a ‘timed practice’ option, in which you receive 20 questions with 30 seconds to answer. Using this feature helps you adapt to the real life problem solving conundrum that is speaking English with another person.

Unlike Babbel and Rosetta Stone, Duolingo is completely free to use. There are a few extras you can opt in for, such as the timed practice option, but there in no obligation whatsoever and plenty to enjoy without paying a cent.

Whether you want to use Duolingo to improve your business English level, or to start off as a basic ESL student, this free program will give you all the practice you need to have a conversation in English or get better at writing. Let's go

FluentU

FluentU uses videos lifted from pop culture, such as music videos, TV adverts and snippets of news segments, and turns them in to English learning experiences.

This app’s method is completely different to that of traditional apps such as Babbel and Duolingo. FluentU eases the learner in to the English language and culture slowly, and you’ll learn real English, exactly how it is spoken in popular culture.

It is available on iOS but not yet on Android.

This app had a wide range of interesting videos, in a variety of entertaining topics.

You’re probably thinking that going headfirst in to a world of fast, pop culture English is a hard way to learn. That’s where you’re wrong. FluentU makes the process easy and memorable. The app lets you read interactive captions on the videos, that allow you to tap on a word and see a photo and the definition.

For example, you can click the word "brought" and this will appear:

Every word in the video is available to be focused on. Amazing!

FluentU keeps a record of all the vocabulary that you have learned and suggests new videos to watch that include what you have learned. This process helps you cement the knowledge by using repetition to continue learning English. It also makes the process personal to you.

FluentU does come at a small price of $8 a month. But, it is still cheaper than most of the traditional app's out there!

Mosalingua

Mosalingua is available to anyone with Android or iOS. This app has again changed the game with a different approach to the other language learning apps on the market. What this app does is utilises flashcards to help you remember words and sentences.

The key to how this app works is the amount of repetition you get with the flashcards.

Once you have learned some new vocab, you will be able to see the same words and phrases over and over again until you can recite them in your sleep.

How does it work?

When you click on the app, you can complete a competency test to see where your English is at. The app uses this to tailor a program that will be doable for you but still help you learn.

There is nothing better than a lesson plan that’s specifically suited to your needs.

Check for English lessons here.

Mosalingua uses full and clear sentences, rather than short, ambiguous phrases.

The app allows you to record yourself as you read the flashcard, which then allows you to review your pronunciation by comparing it to the native speaker on the app.

Mosalingua's full version costs a minuscule $5! Cheaper than a McDonald's happy meal!

So, there is absolutely no excuse to not learn English.
