Difference Between Muay Thai and Other Martial Arts

When starting to practice a martial art it is common to encounter oneself with the question of which discipline is the right one for you and whether you have chosen the right sport. Truth be told, it is quite difficult to compare martial arts to one another simply due to the fact that they are completely different in nature.

But, even if there are many other disciplines with high regard in the world of MMA, it is true that some of the best fighters are primarily Muay Thai fighters. But, what is the difference between this and other disciplines? Which one is better than the other?

Let's start with Karate. Both are ancient disciplines that have Asian origins. Nevertheless, there are big differences between the both of them. Muay Thai can be compared to kick-boxing while Karate has more in common with Kung-Fu. While the two can be used effectively in combat it is true that they focus on different strategies and methods of neutralizing the opponent.

This is why the main difference between the both resides in the power of impact. While Muay Thai strikes are more forceful and do more damage, Karate is based on quickness and precision. Krav Maga is more of a self-defence system built on a variety of moves from different disciplines. The main difference with Muay Thai is that it doesn't have a spiritual component or philosophy. All it focuses on is immobilizing your opponent as quickly as possible by any means necessary.

With that in mind, it is not surprising to see a Krav Maga fighter using Muay Thai movements and others drawn from many sources.

How about Taekwondo? Taekwondo focuses on a wide range of kicking and fast combos that are hard to predict. Compared to this discipline, Muay Thai has a more diverse striking arsenal that includes kicks, punches, knees and elbows. It focuses more on impactful hits, quality over quantity.

Talking about the kicking technique, there is more speed and control in Taekwondo kicks but Muay Thai has more devastating power.

When it comes to Muay Thai and boxing it is important to remember that they are somewhat complementary since many western Thai boxing schools implement traditional boxing techniques into standard Thai training. One thing that they have in common is that training and learning are implemented into sparring sessions. You have to face a challenging opponent and adjust your approach to be able to withstand a real fight.

Something to always keep in mind when comparing Muay Thai to other disciplines is the subject of tradition. When you join classes, you don’t just learn how to kick and punch, you also learn about the rituals and traditions of the sport.
