The fight is won or lost far away from witnesses—behind the lines, in the gym and out there on the road, long before I dance under those lights.” – Muhammad Ali

You’ve been thinking about it for a while and finally you’ve decided to put yourself to the test and start boxing?

There are various reasons why you might want to learn boxing: to get some exercise via sport, to let off steam, or to be able to defend yourself in situations of aggression.

Boxing is very physical and it can be difficult and demanding: you must possess strength and endurance, yet brute force is nothing without technical skill.

So, it is recommended that you begin with a good base understanding of the sport, otherwise you might regret it! Even the smallest bad habit can take root during your first boxing class and it can be very difficult to unlearn… Your first try at the sport could be the foundation of your future boxing training.

That’s why it’s a great idea to have an experienced boxer show you the ropes: they can demonstrate proper technique, observe to monitor any mistakes you might make, and correct you before it becomes a habit.

To prevent a KO, you need a quality coach!

Why Should You Hire a Private Boxing Instructor?

To completely understand the benefits of private boxing classes, let's look at the pros and cons of the alternative, that is, group classes.

In these, you will typically train and fight in a boxing club, where students are divided into groups according to their level.

Depending on the club, and the number of students per group, this can either be a good thing or a bad thing.

For beginners, the disadvantage of a group class is that the instructor has to teach all of their students at the same time: they cannot focus on each individual student at once. This means a beginner boxer could repeat a bad movement many times before it is realised and corrected.

This delay can prove very detrimental because a bad habit can be hard to uproot. A private coach offers individual attention to prevent this from happening.

In addition, one hour of a private class can be two, three or even five times more intense and difficult, especially if you’re training frequently: be careful not to get too fatigued, as this can cause almost all injuries!

Learning the basics of boxing typically involves the following steps: explanation, demonstration, reproduction, correction and simulation.

From footwork to the right hook, to the uppercut, you will learn everything there is to know in each session.

Finally, even generation Y will admit that it’s not really possible to learn how to box alone using your phone or computer, even if the Wikipedia page for boxing is very informative!

While there are decent videos on YouTube, these should complement or reinforce your classes, not be used as training!

Where Do You Find a Private Boxing Coach?

You can find boxing classes for beginners in a number of ways.

The first thing you have to do is decide which style of the sport you want to practise: French boxing, English boxing, US boxing, Thai boxing, Burmese boxing, kickboxing, free-fight, etc.

Some students might want to only use their hands, while others are interested in using their feet, or a variation.

English boxing and French boxing are the most common. When we talk about “boxing”, 99% of the time we are referring to English boxing. It has also been described as "the noble art”!

If you’re interested in English boxing or a similar style, be aware that the sport requires you to provide boxing gloves, of course, but also a kit full of protective athletic gear specific to the sport, which you can typically find at your local boxing club.

While boxing gyms usually provide group lessons, increasingly they are offering private classes upon request, but of course there will be an additional fee.

Alternatively, you could go directly to a private boxing instructor without going through a gym or club: this approach is now possible thanks to the Internet and new technologies.

From Superprof to a search engine to social networks, the possibilities are endless!

Considering the numerous options for private coaching (particularly in Sydney and big cities), don’t be afraid to ask for references, as well as membership deals and discounts! Determine what is possible before you commit.

What Happens During a Beginner's Boxing Class?

When it comes to private boxing classes, the instructor does not have to be a world champion - not only would that be hard to find but it would also be terribly expensive!

What’s most important is that they are a pedagogue and know how to teach effectively the attitudes and gestures that seem intrinsic to most practising boxers, so much so that they often do not know how to describe techniques that for them have become second nature.

The first couple of classes will involve presenting the boxing stage, that is the ring and the main rules of the sport. If you're already a boxing fan, watching either televised or in real life, you will likely progress faster in regards to these aspects.

You will also cover terms specific to the sport and what they mean, such as: KO, KD, right, uppercut, fist, footwork, lightweight, strings, corner, out of range, rotating dodge…

The instructor will then precisely demonstrate each gesture. Ensure that you slowly and accurately repeat each given gesture in order to better memorise it.

Via your coach and consistent practice, your skills will improve and you will become more accomplished. The speed of progression will mostly depend on your motivation and your physical capabilities, but also the frequency of the sessions and the pedagogical abilities of the chosen boxing coach.

Be thorough as your training and skills improve, but remember to let your body rest, particularly since we recommend you balance your boxing practice with that of a complimentary sport such as runnings, bodybuilding, or general fitness. This is advisable unless additional sporting activities have already been organised by your private boxing coach. Diversified workouts are the most successful workouts.

It is vital to have a strong and agile body, both muscular and flexible before jumping into the ring to face an opponent.

After around 20 hours of class, most will have achieved a competent level that will enable them to let off steam and engage their bodies in their first fight against an opponent: the first fight, even at the amateur level, is an unforgettable experience, and you will understand that morale is just as important as the stances and gestures you have memorised.

What Follows Your Beginner's Boxing Course?

As we have learned, private instruction with an experienced coach is the most effective and tailor-made way to learn boxing: it's a customised introduction and education, at your own pace, where you can easily bypass any obstacles (a common inhibition is being too shy).

Once you have the basics sorted, you can branch out to classes in various clubs, the advantage being that you can spar with numerous partners regularly, not only with your coach.

The boxing club is also the perfect place to find opponents to fight in a safe and regularised environment, where you can benefit from the experience and advice of other members.

It'll also provide you with the opportunity to join group training sessions, or find great fitness boxing courses for both women and men.

Of course, this should not keep you from continuing private coaching, if you have the means and the passion, you will certainly advance more rapidly.

Enthusiasm, motivation, and state of mind are the most crucial elements to advancing rapidly! In no time you will be able to say:

Beware the one who will seek me out, for I will send them to the ground!
