About Issam

As a busy student, the last thing you need is a tutor who wastes your time (if you haven't already stumbled across one!). That's why I always review a sample of the material you want to cover before accepting a lesson. This ensures we're a good fit and sets the stage for a smooth, stress-free session that saves us both time. This approach has consistently helped my students achieve high marks and garnered excellent reviews, as shown in the testimonials. My academic qualifications include: • BSc in Economics from the Lebanese American University • MA in Applied Economics from the Lebanese American University • MSc in Applied Financial Economics from HEC Montreal, the business school affiliated with the University of Montreal (UdeM). Teaching is not just a profession but a passion of mine, alongside hobbies such as biking, running, swimming, going to the gym, and playing table tennis!

  • 1) When did you develop an interest in your chosen field and in private tutoring?

My interest in Economics began during my first year as an undergraduate student in business school. Among courses like Finance, Accounting, Marketing, and Management, Economics stood out as the subject I truly enjoyed. This passion led me to specialize in Economics, earning my Bachelor of Science with distinction. I then pursued a Master's in Applied Economics, for which I was awarded a full scholarship. After completing that, I continued my academic journey with a second Master's in Applied Financial Economics. Tutoring has always been a natural extension of my love for the subject, allowing me to share my knowledge and enthusiasm. The ultimate reward comes from seeing my students improve and receiving positive feedback on their progress.
  • 2) Tell us more about the subject you teach, the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less).

I teach Economics, a subject that provides people with a better understanding of the world around them. I particularly enjoy discussing microeconomics, where we explore how individuals and businesses make decisions about resource allocation. It's fascinating to see students grasp how these concepts apply to everyday life. Macroeconomics is also a favorite, as it helps us analyze the economy's performance and understand issues like inflation and unemployment. There's no topic I like less, but I always strive to ensure every concept is clear and engaging for my students.
  • 3) Did you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?

Yes, my first microeconomics professor during my undergraduate studies had a profound impact on me. His passion for the subject inspired me to delve deeper into Economics and pursue research. We later coauthored two papers together, which marked the beginning of my academic journey in Economics. His mentorship continues to inspire me in both my studies
    and teaching.
  • 4) What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?

A good tutor must be patient, empathetic, and adaptable. Patience allows you to guide students through difficult concepts without frustration. Empathy helps you understand their struggles and connect with them on a personal level. Adaptability ensures you can tailor your teaching methods to fit each student's unique learning style. Above all, a good tutor is passionate about the subject and genuinely invested in their students' success.
  • 5) Provide a valuable anecdote related to your subject or your days at school.

During my undergraduate studies, I once tutored a fellow student who was struggling with an upcoming microeconomics exam. He was frustrated and on the verge of giving up, but I worked with him intensively for several weeks. When he received his exam results, he was overjoyed to have passed with flying colors. This experience reinforced my belief in the power of persistence and the positive impact a dedicated tutor can have on a student's academic journey.
  • 6) What were the difficulties or challenges you faced or still face in your subject?

One of the biggest challenges in Economics is making abstract concepts relatable and understandable for students who may not have a strong background in the subject. The technical jargon and complex theories can be intimidating. My challenge as a tutor is to simplify these concepts without losing their essence, making them accessible and engaging for
    all students.
  • 7) Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general or an element of the subject or something completely different?

My passion lies in both Economics and teaching. I find great fulfillment in helping others understand and appreciate the subject. Whether it's breaking down complex theories or seeing the "aha" moment on a student's face when they grasp a difficult concept! Teaching Economics brings me immense satisfaction.

Outside of academics, I am also passionate about staying active through sports like basketball, swimming, and running, which help me maintain a balanced lifestyle.
  • 8. What makes you a Superprof (besides answering this interview question :-P)?

What makes me a Superprof is my commitment to my students' success. I am not just a tutor; I am a mentor, a guide, and a supporter. I strive to make every session engaging and tailored to my students' needs, ensuring they leave with a deeper understanding and confidence in the subject. The positive feedback and results my students achieve are a testament to my dedication and effectiveness as a tutor!
