About Jasmine
My saxophone teaching philosophy is built around cultivating technical excellence alongside creative freedom and emotional expression. Over several years, I’ve worked with students ranging from beginners discovering the instrument to advanced players honing improvisational fluency and stylistic nuance. Foundational skills like breath support, embouchure control, finger dexterity, and precise rhythm are emphasized to build a strong technical base. Tone development is key—I guide students through exercises that develop dynamic control, articulation clarity, vibrato, and phrasing to shape their unique sound. Music theory and ear training are integrated with practical application in repertoire that reflects each student’s interests, from classical études and concert band music to jazz improvisation and pop covers. Improvisation is central to my teaching; I help students explore scale work, melodic development, and rhythmic creativity through progressive exercises and interactive call-and-response activities that build confidence and musical intuition. Technology like recording apps and play-along tracks enriches practice and creative exploration. Performance preparation, including managing stage presence and anxiety, is also part of the curriculum to ensure students feel ready to share their music. One of my proudest moments was helping a student overcome their fear of improvisation to become a confident soloist and ensemble leader. My goal is to provide a warm, encouraging space where students develop both technical skill and expressive freedom, growing into passionate saxophonists who love making music.

Teaching saxophone is a journey of discovery, where technique meets personal expression. I believe that every student brings a unique voice to the instrument, and my role is to help them find and refine that voice. From the first lesson, I focus on building a solid technical foundation—posture, breath control, embouchure, tone production, finger technique, articulation, and rhythmic precision. These elements are essential for producing a beautiful, controlled sound and for navigating the complexities of the saxophone.
However, I also recognize that each student learns differently. Some may grasp concepts quickly, while others need more time and repetition. I adapt my teaching methods to suit individual learning styles, ensuring that each student feels understood and supported. I incorporate a diverse range of musical genres into lessons, including classical, jazz, pop, and world music, to keep students engaged and to broaden their musical horizons.
For students interested in improvisation, I introduce them to scales, patterns, and ear training exercises that build confidence and creativity. Technology plays a significant role in my teaching approach. I utilize recording devices, tuners, metronomes, and digital sheet music to enhance practice sessions and provide immediate feedback. These tools help students become more self-aware and independent in their learning. One of the most rewarding aspects of teaching is witnessing a student's growth. I recall a young student who struggled with timing and rhythm.
Through patient guidance and consistent practice, they not only improved but also developed a deep love for jazz improvisation. Their transformation was a testament to the power of dedicated instruction and the student's perseverance. My ultimate goal is to inspire students to enjoy the process of learning, to express themselves through music, and to carry the lessons learned into all areas of their lives.
