I understand that every student has a different writing style when it comes to essays, so I like to teach the basics of essay writing first. After, I have students work on a rough draft that we can go through together sentence by sentence and improve it together so that they understand how to do it on their own for the future.
When teaching Classical Culture, I like to use a specific Classical text (like the Iliad or a play) and through the literature, we can deconstruct what the classical world looked like. I find this works well because then students are not only learning the history and the culture but are understanding how they influence one another through the literature.
