About Amelia
My teaching philosophy for saxophone is grounded in the belief that music education should inspire both technical growth and personal expression. I work with each student to build a healthy, efficient playing technique focused on breath control, embouchure flexibility, posture, finger dexterity, and tone production, ensuring a strong foundation for all styles. Alongside technical work, I emphasize musical elements such as phrasing, articulation, dynamics, and vibrato to cultivate a warm and engaging sound. Music theory and ear training are incorporated through practical application in repertoire and improvisation, providing students with tools to analyze and understand music deeply. Improvisation is encouraged from early stages, approached as a natural extension of listening and musical conversation, with structured exercises to develop confidence and creativity. Repertoire is selected based on students’ interests and goals, including jazz, blues, classical, and contemporary works, keeping lessons relevant and motivating. Technology aids learning, allowing students to record performances, practice with backing tracks, and engage with digital tools for enhanced musical exploration. One particularly rewarding experience was mentoring a student who transitioned from hesitant beginner to accomplished soloist, gaining confidence and artistic maturity along the way. I strive to create a positive, patient, and inspiring learning environment where students feel empowered to discover and express their unique musical voice.

My saxophone teaching is founded on the belief that technical skill, musicality, and personal expression must be developed together for meaningful progress. I begin by teaching foundational elements such as breath control, embouchure formation, finger coordination, and rhythm accuracy.
These skills are reinforced with regular ear training and theory lessons to deepen musical understanding and prepare students for improvisation and ensemble work. Each lesson is tailored to the student’s musical interests, whether that involves classic jazz standards, contemporary music, or experimental genres. I integrate improvisation early to develop creativity and comfort with spontaneous musical ideas. Technology plays an important role: students record themselves, use metronomes, and practice with play-along tracks to enhance technique and timing. Performance coaching, including stage presence and anxiety management, prepares students for auditions, recitals, and gigs.
I strive to create a positive, encouraging environment where students feel free to explore, make mistakes, and build confidence. I’ve seen remarkable growth in students who initially struggled with tone or rhythm, watching them transform into expressive, confident saxophonists ready to share their music. My mission is to foster lifelong musicianship and a passion for the saxophone that goes beyond technique to connect with heart and soul.
