About Henry
My former art student (age 17) who I taught for only 6 months got accepted to an animation school in Vancouver, messaged me while she was in a life drawing class (drawing the human model).
She messaged me on September 9, 2025:
"Currently in my last hour of life figure class and I cannot thank you enough for teaching me the fundamentals of drawing, Henry. I’m realizing a lot of the people around me do NOT know “how” to draw!
I would’ve been in the same boat if it weren’t for you."
I am a professional drawing instructor with 35 years of teaching expertise. I've been drawing for over 50 years. My passion lies in helping beginners develop their drawing skills and unlock their artistic potential. I committed a cumulative span of 14 years to my educational pursuits, involving Visual Fine Arts at Niagara College, Fashion Design at Ryerson Polytechnic University, Fine Arts at Ontario College of Art and Design, Classical Animation at Sheridan College, and classical drawing atelier at Michael John Angel Studios (Toronto campus).
Throughout my extensive career, I have honed my teaching methods to cater specifically to beginners. I understand the challenges that newcomers to drawing may face and have developed effective strategies to overcome them. My goal is to provide a supportive and nurturing environment where beginners can feel comfortable and confident in their artistic journey. With my guidance, beginners will learn the fundamental principles of drawing, including geometric shapes, perspective, foreshortening, overlap, figure drawing, measuring, proportion, light and shadow, composition and color. I believe in a hands-on approach, providing step-by-step demonstrations and practical exercises to reinforce learning. I also encourage creative exploration and personal expression, allowing beginners to develop their unique style.
My teaching journey began during my first year at Ryerson fashion design school when I noticed that many of my classmates were struggling with drawing the human figure in class. As the instructor did not provide adequate guidance, I took it upon myself to assist anyone who needed help. After class, a student approached me seeking assistance with her fashion figure drawings. I started tutoring her on a weekly basis, free of charge, and we developed a strong friendship. Drawing and teaching are my areas of expertise. My teaching style was inspired by my experience with a math tutor during my high school years. From grades 6 to 9, I faced challenges in math, prompting my father to hire a tutor who worked with me five days a week throughout the school year. This tutor had a remarkable ability to break down complex equations and simplify them, enabling me to grasp the concepts. As I began to understand, I gained confidence in my abilities. Math eventually became my favorite subject, and I eagerly anticipated every quiz, test, and exam. I adopted my tutor's teaching method and applied it to my own teaching approach. Since that first day of helping my fellow fashion school students draw the human figure, I have continued to teach for over 34 years.
I assisted students in gaining admission to various prestigious programs, including Ryerson Polytechnic University's Fashion Design program, Sheridan College's Animation program, Capilano College's 2D Animation program, and Emily Carr University of Art and Design's 3D Animation program and animation program at Vanarts.
Here are my additional teaching experiences:
- Assisted first-year Sheridan Animation students with their animation
work and figure drawing.
- Taught arts and mathematics at the Summer School Enrichment
program at North Albion Collegiate Institute in Etobicoke, Ontario (the
first of its kind in Ontario).
- Conducted Sunday school lessons for children aged 5-12 years in
Toronto.
- Provided drawing instruction to professional adults in Toronto.
- Tutored elementary and high school students in math in Toronto.
- Taught drawing at Etobicoke Cantonese Chinese School on Saturdays.
- Provided ESL tutoring to students in Toronto.
- Mentored male teenagers in Toronto's inner city for a period of 3 years.
- Taught drawing to International ESL students at Pera College in
Vancouver.
- Worked as a Behavior Interventionist for 3 years, teaching drawing to
autistic children in Vancouver.
- Taught teenagers and young adults with ADHD and dyslexia.
- Instructed special needs students at WhyteCliff Agile Learning Centre
in Langley, British Columbia.
-Taught at the City of Coquitlam Community Centre for adults and
seniors.
- Currently engaged in private tutoring.
In my lessons, I prioritize simplicity and ease of learning. My ultimate goal is for all my students to surpass my own abilities, gain confidence in drawing, and achieve their personal goals.

I'm a dedicated drawing instructor specializing in teaching foundational drawing concepts. Have you ever felt frustrated while drawing, unsure of where to start or how to improve? I believe that having a clear direction and understanding of drawing concepts is crucial for progress. Just like a map guides you in a new country, the drawing concepts I teach act as a guide to help you navigate the world of drawing. Without these concepts, you may feel lost and confused. My goal is to empower students to master these concepts, enabling them to draw confidently and even create imaginative drawings, such as a hand from their imagination. Teaching Approach: I take a patient and supportive approach to teaching, guiding students to grasp and internalize foundational drawing concepts. Through personalized effective instruction, I help students develop a solid understanding of drawing. I also teach figure drawing, gesture drawing, classical drawing atelier, watercolor painting, fashion illustration/fashion design (including draping, pattern drafting, and sewing), portrait drawing, perspective drawing, character design, concept design, storyboarding, animation layout, and classical animation. By providing simple step-by-step guidance, I ensure that students gain the necessary skills and confidence to apply these concepts independently. I am your coach and your cheerleader. Lesson Structure: Lessons are designed to be engaging and interactive, with a focus on practical application. Throughout the course, students are given drawing tests to assess their progress and reinforce their learning. I provide constructive feedback and support to help students overcome challenges and refine their skills. Whether you are a beginner or have some drawing experience, I tailor the lessons to your individual needs and goals.

Perfect! I’m so glad I found Henry to teach my kids! Henry is very patient and knowledgeable teaching art to young children. Unlike other art teachers my kids have had, Henry actually teaches! He will make sure your kids learn the basics of drawing before moving on to the next level. My kids love their new art teacher and look forward to their weekly lessons!
Perfect! Henry really took the time to understand what I want to achieve in the class. He guided with humour and grace with my mistakes. His skills were evident. I will be back for more.

Perfect! Henry is very patient and he is proffessional. Learning basics and he tailors well to my level
Perfect! I recently graduated from a Masters degree in animation, but I found that my skills still were not up to industry standard. I struggled especially with perspective, drawing artificial objects etc. Because of this I went in search of an art and animation tutor for more structured learning and to get feedback and guidance. That's when I met Henry.
I really like Henry's approach to teaching. He starts by teaching the basics - drawing a cube, to drawing 3D objects, and then continues to build on the skills from there. With every lesson I felt I learned something new and useful that I could apply to my art. He's very friendly, patient, and knows how to make learning art fun. He'll make sure I understand a concept/technique before moving on to the next, so I always feel that we're on the same page.
Also note, I am a neurodivergent student (Autism and ADHD). I found that Henry's teaching style is well suited towards my neurodivergent needs.- Henry's response :
Perfect! Henry was very engaging and fun. He taught me the fundamentals of pencil art which helped with my confidence for drawing. I would highly recommend Henry's lessons.
Perfect! Henry has been a very good teacher so far. He makes sure the basics are well understood before moving to a different subject, and will also give some quick refresh on later lessons to make sure the lesson sticks longer.
Perfect! Henry is an amazing teacher; he leads his students from the simplest things to much more complicated topics gradually, step by step. That is why the students' achievements can be seen very fast, which is very important for students' self-confidence and motivation. It's very important that Henry does believe in you even if you are almost ready to give up!
Last but not least: Henry can make his explanations 100% understandable even for those, whose native language is not English (like me).Perfect! Easy to explain, and able to clear out any confusion in what I needed to learn
- Henry's response :
Perfect! A thoughtful and fun teacher! He makes the lessons interesting and understandable, and its just fun to work with him.
- Henry's response :
Perfect! Henry is an amazing teacher! He is very patient and understanding. If I am struggling with certain concepts he provides different techniques to help me better understand. He's not only an outstanding teacher but an incredibly kind person :)
Perfect! Henry is a great teacher for the drawing foundation. My son liked his lesson very much, and they had a great time during the lesson. My son learned a lot from drawing a cube to a fire truck. excellent.
- Henry's response :
He is such a joy to teach.
Perfect! Henry is a fantastic teacher. He understands the foundations of what makes a great artist and knows how to teach it in a way that is easy to grasp.
- Henry's response :
Perfect! Great instructor. Makes concepts easy to understand, very good teaching techniques.
- Henry's response :
Perfect! Even though we’ve only had a couple lessons, I’ve learned and drawn more in 3 weeks with Henry than I had in the past year trying to learn by myself online.
Online learning and taking art classes in school may work for some people, but nothing beats having someone right beside you to answer questions, to point out mistakes, to motivate you, etc.
Henry is easygoing and friendly, which makes the lesson fun instead of boring. He also caters his lessons to individual skill level, and emphasizes the importance of the fundamentals.
Overall he is a great teacher and will definitely help you along in your art journey- Henry's response :
Perfect! Henry is thoughtful, skilled and helpful. He takes time to ensure you have the skills to accomplish what you've set out to accomplish as an artist.
- Henry's response :
Perfect! Henry has been an immense help through my artistic journey in applying to various art universities, including Emily Carr - which I was later accepted into. His teaching style is relaxed and patient: he is aware that it takes time for a student to fully understand the material at hand. I am being taught the foundations of drawing in a structured and thoughtful way, where each concept builds on the other. This has greatly helped me improve in a short period of time and become a better artist.

Henry has helped me to draw again.
If you want to learn how to draw, I highly recommend Henry.I've known Henry on a personal level for over a decade now and have known of his passion for art and teaching from the very beginning.
It wasn't until recently that I had the opportunity to work with Henry on a professional capacity when my company was piloting the idea of facilitating continued learning courses in the realm of extended life skills.
There was a demand for an art course, and Henry was easily the first person I had in mind to reach out to.
He came into the office, and taught an introductory art course to roughly 9 attendees (ranging from ages 12 to 44). 2 of the attendees were co-founders of our company and wanted to sit in and experience the class first hand.
The feedback I received both during and afterwards were astoundingly positive. They loved his energy, positivity, and professionalism. I was told by my partners that he had a fantastic balance of being very hands on, while also knowing exactly when to step back and have you develop the techniques on your own.
His lessons were very simple to follow and understand, and he encourages questions so that he can gauge which areas he should be supporting.
We'll definitely be continuing our partnership with Henry in the future to come, and I cannot recommend him enough.

Henry's students artistic works have been impressive. He has a genuine love & passion for his craft and for his students .- Edward Tu
I have seen some of Henry’s students’ works and they are quite impressive. When I was younger, I dabbled in drawing, oil painting, and Chinese water colouring/calligraphy, so I know how difficult it is to learn various artistic techniques. I was a high school music teacher for 25 years, and a department head of Phys. Ed. And Arts for 15, so I have seen many talented students throughout my career. I would highly recommend Henry as a great teacher.
Hey this is Kemal, I was one of Henry's past students. I highly recommend Henry as an Art tutor. He has guided me as well as been a kind and caring person. He is very patient and explains everything in full details making sure that the student learns well.
I've been an artist and art teacher for 20+ years and I have known Henry for the same amount of time. Simply put he loves art and has a passion for teaching all that he has learned over the years. He focuses on fostering creativity, imagination, and critical thinking skills in his students. He encourages his students to explore different forms of art and to express themselves in their own unique ways and provides opportunities for them to reflect on their own progress and growth. Henry also uses constructive feedback to challenge his students to take risks and push themselves out of their comfort zones and creates a safe and supportive learning environment, which helps his students to develop not only their artistic abilities but also their self-confidence and resilience. Without hesitation I recommend Henry!!

Artist & EducatorHenry is a very trustworthy and great teacher. He is always supportive and is very patient with me. Even after just one lesson with Henry, my confidence in my drawing has improved significantly. He never gets frustrated, and breaks down the techniques in drawing to make it easier for me to understand. I recommend Henry to any student who wants to greatly improve their drawing skills. - Grade 7 student
Henry has been teaching my daughter for a while now and I have seen a great improvement in her drawing. Henry is very patient and friendly, I'd recommend him to anyone wanting to improve their drawing skills.
I've been taking drawing lessons with Henry for the past year or so, and in that time I've learned a lot. I had no drawing experience before (total beginner), and Henry has taught me the fundamentals in a way that I found easy to approach, understand, and practice.
Henry's method of teaching (for beginners, at least) is in breaking down complex tasks into smaller, more basic steps - this has helped me to train my eye, and to see any complex drawing project as a series of smaller, more manageable elements.
I've enjoyed taking lessons with Henry. He has a friendly, and personable teaching style, which makes the learning process enjoyable, and has kept me engaged with my drawing practices.
I would highly recommend Henry as a drawing instructor here on superprof!
- AWHenry develops a positive and fun rapport with all learners. Along with his strong background in arts, Henry greatest strength is his belief that all learners can achieve a high level of success.
I learned a lot from Henry about drawing. What benefits me most is that Henry taught me how to analyze and get the structure of the object to be drawn by breaking it down to such basic shapes as cubes, cylinders and how to draw these basic shapes which actually all objects consist of. Henry also taught me useful techniques to make my drawing more accurate, for example, how to use proportions, plumb line and negative space.
Learning perspectives from Henry has been a fun part, especially the two-point perspective.
Learning drawing from Henry brought me a new perspective of observing this 3D world. It brought me some interesting experience of converting things between two dimensions.
