About Eden

My saxophone teaching philosophy is grounded in the belief that technical proficiency and creative expression are complementary forces that shape a musician’s growth. I guide students—beginners to advanced—through a carefully structured technical curriculum: breath management for sustained phrasing, embouchure alignment for tone clarity, finger dexterity for agility, articulation for clarity, and rhythmic precision for musical coherence. As students advance, I refine their intonation and expressive techniques—dynamics, vibrato, and tone color—through ensemble and solo contexts. Simultaneously, I champion improvisation as the heart of creative musicianship. Starting with melodic improvisation over simple chord changes, students grow into composing motifs, exploring scales and modes, and crafting solos that reflect their personalities. Music theory is never abstract—it lives within the music and improvisation students study, helping them internalize functional harmony, form, rhythm, and stylistic nuance. Repertoire is personally meaningful, drawn from jazz, blues, pop, classical, or even film music, and adapted to each student’s skill level. Together we set milestones—preparing for school showcases, jazz nights, audition submissions, or personal recordings—providing structure and inspiration. A deeply rewarding moment was leading a reserved student to share an original composition in a public recital, a moment that reflected their maturation as a musician. Ultimately, I strive to cultivate saxophonists who are not only technically skilled and expressive but also self-directed, creative, and emotionally connected.

Saxophone, to me, is an art form that bridges intuition and intellect, and my teaching is designed to guide students through both. We begin with essential tone work: long tones, overtones, embouchure exercises, and breath support to lay a reliable technical groundwork.

Then, we move into musical fluency—scales, arpeggios, chord-tone targeting—applied directly to improvisation. I encourage every student to explore composition, transcription, and performance from day one. My lessons are interactive and responsive, using a mix of traditional repertoire and creative assignments. We’ll write solos, build grooves, and reimagine standards through different stylistic lenses.

I work extensively with students on solo structure—how to start strong, build tension, resolve ideas, and develop a musical arc. We also explore tone color, vibrato, and expressive techniques to shape your voice on the instrument. Listening is a huge part of our work together; we study the legends and also the modern voices shaping saxophone today. I use technology—digital recorders, slow-downer apps, and backing track libraries—to encourage mindful, iterative practice.

One memorable teaching moment was helping a student produce a six-minute solo suite based on their own theme, using motivic development and dynamic control to tell a story. Whether you're learning to jam with friends or preparing for a conservatory audition, I make sure you’re equipped not just with skills but with the musical identity to stand out. Teaching saxophone is about more than technique—it’s about empowerment through sound.
