About MICHAEL

I have been teaching since 1994. During this time I have loved coaching boys and girls on the sports field as well as teaching them the art of learning. Learning how to learn is one of the most overlooked aspects of teaching. I progressed to the level of Deputy Head Teacher in South Africa before returning to teach in the UK after a few years teaching in the Southern Hemisphere.

  • When did you develop an interest in your chosen field and in private tutoring?

I loved learning about Economics at school. I loved the fact that the subject was so topical and covered things that I could listen to on the news every night. My teacher inspired me to become a teacher. He had so many stories about his time in the private sector (banking) and he had literally thousands of newspaper headlines and cartoons relating to economic theory that he would project up onto the big screen. Every lesson was a treat. It is sometimes tough to dig deep into the theory during class time as you have to cater to the needs of multiple students. What I love about tutoring is the fact that I can have real one on one conversations with my students - so that we can unpack theory and even develop new ones.
  • Tell us more about the subject you teach, the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less).

Economics is my first love (after my wife and children). I think I prefer micro economics more than macro as there are so many more diagrams that can be used to illustrate theory. They say that a picture speaks a thousand words - this is true when illustrating how a firm makes a profit or loss or when showing the effect of a tax on the producer and consumer. On the macro level, it is fascinating seeing students applying their theory to every day situations in the news. Using the AD and AS model to illustrate the effects of government policy on the economy is my favourite part of the macro specification.
  • Did you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?

As i mentioned earlier, my Economics teacher at school inspired me to teach. He could have made a fortune in banking, but chose to chose a profession where he could make a real difference in the lives of students - and talk about something he loves all day long - this is what I get the chance to do now.
  • What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?

First of all, you need to be super organised as a teacher's days are full and clashing commitments and cancelled bookings are not an option. Secondly, you need to have stamina - teaching after hours after a full day requires mental and physical fitness. Thirdly, as sessions are one to one in most cases, the tutor needs to understand the individual needs of each student. Not every student wants to be taught the same way and so the style, delivery and content will be different for each student. Tutors need to be flexible enough to be able to teach online using web apps or face to face - in an individual or group setting.
  • Provide a valuable anecdote related to your subject or your days at school.

A student came up to me the other day and told me how much they were enjoying Varsity. I asked them what they were studying and they said Economics. I was a bit surprised - he had always struggled with Economics He said to me: " You probably thought that I did not enjoy Economics - I just found it tough - but the way you taught us and the things you got us to explore made me want to study it further"
  • What were the difficulties or challenges you faced or still facing in your subject?

Many students find the content abstract as they have not had to deal with concepts like Marginal cost, taxation or the Macro Economic multiplier in their young lives. So I need to find ways to make it relevant to what they see all around them on a daily basis. Many students do not like to analyse the Economic diagrams. I love turning doubters into diagram addicts!!
  • Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general or an element of the subject or something completely different?

I love watching people develop as they stretch themselves and take on new challenges.

You don't get a better chance to observe that than in a school environment. In the same way, with teaching and learning technologies changing so much year by year, I love to stretch myself and learn new skills. I have recently obtained a Post Graduate qualification in Educational technology from the University of Cape Town.
  • What makes you a Superprof (besides answering these interview questions :-P) ?

My knowledge, my experience, my understanding of how young minds work and my passion for Economics!!
