I was a failing students. Literally at thre bottom of my class in primary school, then I had an awakening. I questioned the material, engaged with with it and soon I cultivated curiousity and a hunger for knowledge. I have no secret sauce , however , if I can make a student realize that innate intellect is a myth then the student will seeany subject as interesting and worthwhile. Results will follow. An example would be explaining the history of Calculus and why we need it .
I issue readings then discuss them with the student. All the while testing them and gauging their interaction with the material.
