About Kayla

Piano lessons with me are more than just instruction—they are a collaborative experience in creativity, structure, and self-expression. I believe that music is one of the most powerful ways we can connect with ourselves and others, and learning to play the piano should reflect that potential. I emphasize developing strong technique—finger independence, coordination between hands, proper posture, rhythmic stability, and accurate note reading—but always with the aim of supporting expressive and meaningful playing. I love incorporating listening exercises, improvisation prompts, and even basic composition projects into lessons, because I’ve found that these help students engage more deeply and personally with the instrument. Each lesson is crafted with the student in mind; some students are drawn to classical repertoire, others to pop or film scores, and some are more interested in writing their own music or playing by ear. I see each of these as valid paths into musical fluency. One of my most fulfilling teaching experiences involved helping an adult student return to piano after an 8-year break. We worked slowly, building comfort and confidence with every piece, and it was incredible to see them rediscover a part of themselves they had nearly lost. I encourage my students to track their own progress, set realistic goals, and stay kind to themselves in the learning process. Ultimately, I see piano teaching as a way to help people access a part of their identity that’s creative, expressive, and resilient.

In my teaching, I emphasize that piano is much more than a set of skills—it is a form of personal storytelling and emotional connection. My lessons begin by assessing each student’s current abilities and musical tastes, allowing me to craft a customized path that keeps learning both challenging and engaging. Technical development covers finger strength, independence, sight-reading, and rhythmic precision, but these elements always serve the bigger goal of expressive playing.

I help students understand phrasing, tone, and dynamics, guiding them to play with feeling and intention. Creativity is integral to my teaching, so I incorporate improvisation, composing short pieces, and exploring different musical styles to broaden their horizons. I also stress the importance of consistent, mindful practice and provide students with realistic, motivating goals. Technology is a valuable tool in my lessons—I often use recording for self-assessment and apps that strengthen ear training and rhythm skills.

One particularly meaningful teaching experience involved helping a student prepare for a challenging recital repertoire, and watching their transformation from nervousness to confident artistry was inspiring. I want every student to leave my lessons feeling capable, inspired, and connected to music on a deeper level.
