Acting Tips for Beginners

Acting is a skill that can be perfected. While it is true that talent can play an important role in performers careers, like any discipline, acting can also become a craft of repetition, perseverance and skill perfecting.

Acting classes are a great way for you to perfect your performance and finding the right teacher is definitely the number one tip. Still, there are some small tips and tricks that you can look that can prove quite helpful.

Whether you are a beginner or a seasoned actor, these tips might help you look at yourself and your acting skills differently and can get you even further in your career:

  1. Know what your character wants: if you want to play a role successfully, you need to get to know your character. You need to act and play a role with an objective in mind and that objective will come with the motivation of your character. This motivation not only comes from the text or script but also from the actor's imagination.
  2. Read the entire script: it is important that you read the script multiple times. This will give you a clearer idea of the way you can approach the character and the different perspectives the audience might have about the story. Look up words, expressions, people and situations that are unfamiliar and research the world of the play (historical setting, time period, location, etc) so that you can embody it.
  3. Spend as much time listening as you do talking: you should always be aware of what is happening in your surroundings, especially when doing stage acting (but also screen). You should always be present and listening to your fellow actors when you aren’t talking since acting is as much about listening as it is about saying your own lines.
  4. Learn your dialogue: know your lines and memorise them as much as possible, remember that they are on the script for a reason. On the flip side, don’t over practice your lines and give some room for discovery and for taking direction.
  5. Watch as much theatre, TV and film as you can: watch actors, the way they move, talk and walk. What are their facial expressions? How are they conveying emotion? What can you learn from them? What makes them great?
  6. Make sure your instrument is fine-tuned: in acting, your body is your instrument. You should work on developing skills that help you fine-tune that instrument. Voice work is the first step for an actor as well as movement skills, which are also very important. Knowing how to use the physical being to support the characteristics of a role will enhance your character and performance.
  7. Practice and be disciplined: devote time to practicing and perfecting your skill. Find other actors and read plays with them. Do scene work, write, hang out with designers and artists. You can learn acting skills from various people and their natural theatricality so make sure you are immersed in a creative scene where you can find inspiration.
