About Torien
Most tutors have learned about just one thing: teaching. The problem with this is a lot like the problem with writers who only like to learn about writing (I know because I used be like this too). The problem is that you often end up with nothing to write about — or nothing to teach about — because you have too little experience to draw upon. This is why I am proud that my story is a varied one. I began as a classically trained actor, producer, playwright, and dramaturg. Since 2015 I have been co-Artistic Director of a community-engaged immersive arts company, It’s Not A Box Theatre. We have toured work to Fringe Festivals, SummerWorks Festival, and the Prague Quadrennial several times. In 2020 we branched out into game design and installation, leading to my MFA thesis research in autistic/ADHD modes of interdisciplinary creation at Simon Fraser University, graduating with a 3.98 GPA. Over the past decade I have facilitated countless workshops for emerging writers of all kinds through the Sask Writers Workshop, often teaching writing fundamentals and critiquing fiction and dramatic text. I have instructed classes and residencies for both youth and adults in playwriting, dramaturgy, devised performance creation, and acting at Persephone Theatre School, Trickster Theatre, GTNT, E.D. Feehan Catholic High School. As a Teaching Assistant at Simon Fraser University I led tutorial discussions, critiqued essays, graded exams, and guided student research. Most recently I have been conducting game-design-based learning research with Brainiacs Adventures. All this experience in the arts, social practice, production, education, game studies, and creative research has provided me with an interdisciplinary understanding of literature, writing, performance, politics, social studies, psychology, and how to teach these to students of various ages. If you want someone who knows that teaching is about more than just "learning to teach", I'm your guy :)

My pedagogy takes inspiration from games-based learning and the Reggio Emilia approach, which often uses interdisciplinary projects and emergent curriculum to follow students' natural curiosities and modes of learning. This may be challenging in a tutoring environment, but I believe there are still ways to center the various expressive languages of students as well as their rights and agency in the media through which they learn and the pace at which they do so. This might look like inviting students to conduct historical or ethnographic research around their own personal interests, or employ figures of speech and literary devices in creative writing exercises, or understand classical literature through TTRPG design or theater roleplay. Any subject and any challenge can be gamified, and each approach depends on the student's learning style, strengths, weaknesses, access needs, and curiosities. Finally, broad and versatile documentation (of both the process and results) is paramount to include the parents as collaborators. Based on my broad experience, I am comfortable offering lessons to students of all ages, ideally for the humanities, arts, and social studies. Even though I am a qualified sessional lecturer at a university and may be best suited as a tutor for this level and perhaps high school, I have a lot of experience teaching primary school children and would love the opportunity to apply my research in social practice, ludology, and disability studies to further develop my play-based pedagogy for oft-neglected age groups. Students deserve to learn not just how to test well, but how to understand the world and themselves as learners. To me, creativity is the greatest tool for this.
