Students who enroll in language courses at school, online with a dedicated language school, face to face with a group, or with a private tutor for an hour or two per week, tend to find that they are part of a special kind of people, as it can take a lot of time, certainly more than a term of study, to master (nor is it free for that matter - have a look at the price of teaching per hour, per week, or per term before you book).
German really does open a lot of doors for people, as your tutor or teachers will tell you. This is thanks to its use across 4 countries in Europe (Austria, Belgium, Germany, and Switzerland) and presence in many online settings as well as face to face in diasporas the world over, spoken by approximately 130 million people. Definitely worth spending a term or year of your time engaging with teaching and learning for a couple of classes per week then!
German, as the name suggests, is a Germanic language (like Dutch, the Scandinavian languages, and to some extent English) - this is something you will definitely learn in your first lesson and will be explained in English rather than German. The next thing you will encounter as you come across some basic vocabulary is also a key grammar point -Â der, die, das. German is known for its prickly grammar and the fact that it really does take years to get great at this, although learners should not panic as there are tips to memorise vocabulary and the flow comes naturally the more that you speak.
Der, die, and das are the German equivalents for the in English. Der is masculine, die is feminine, and das is neutral. Don't let the names fool you though, since they don't really have anything to do with anatomical or psychological sex or gender. Whilst there is some logic to it - Der Mann - the man - this tapers off quickly within your courses since there are many exceptions - Das Mädchen - the girl - so you really start to learn the endings of words and how they fit into context as you learn them.
The other key grammar point of German is syntax, which is incredibly important as it varies a lot more than in English. Here, you will find that different clauses take different word orders and you need to obey this very rigidly in order to be understood. Furthermore, certain verbs with prepositions, similar to in English, have to either put the preposition at the end depending on the tense of the word or keep it where it is but put an infix (extra syllable/morpheme that goes in the middle) to make it past tense. This rough explanation doesn't do justice, but needless to say, a tutor or teacher is regularly needed to keep students on top of such finicky rules!
Moving away from grammar, you will also focus on the roles of the German language on a global scale, as well as how the concepts of identity and Heimat (Home) permeate throughout society in germanophone countries. The social aspect of language learning is just as important as the grammatical and lexical, and German language classes place a large emphasis on this.
With dedication, you can level up really quickly and go to a lesson straight from work, or take some online classes which also give good support to the student. It's just as much about the commitment to the lessons as it is the price and time spent on them.
Something we can tell you for free (because it is obvious) is that high-level language students can work as a translator in any location across the world. You can have fun while learning but be really serious about your career aspirations, thus a couple of hours spent per week inside class, combined with the hour per day outside class, can really mount up over a term and a year, and get you to this level.
Linguistics is another clear career path, with German and English having a lot of schools and university resources worldwide, which means there is regular government funding available for research grants in this area, even on the Gold Coast or in Australia.
You could also consider becoming a language teacher, maybe combining with French, Italian, or Spanish if you already speak them. This can be at school, university, with a private student, or just in a friendly and fun way with friends and family. Work in education has great benefits that can also open many doors.
